Pakistan Announces Temporary Halt of Afghan Operations

Pakistan has declared a five-day suspension of military operations against neighbouring Afghanistan, coinciding with the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan. The announcement comes amid heightened tensions following a deadly attack on a rehabilitation centre in Kabul earlier this week.

The incident, which occurred on Monday at the Omid Drug Rehabilitation Hospital in Kabul, resulted in significant casualties. According to the Afghan Taliban government, over 400 people were killed and 265 injured in the attack. Funerals for some of the victims were held on Wednesday, further highlighting the scale of the tragedy.

Pakistan has maintained that the attack on the rehabilitation centre was not intentional. “Our operations are precisely aimed at military installations and terrorist infrastructures,” a Pakistani official stated. Islamabad alleges that extremist groups often cross the border into Pakistan to conduct attacks and accuses the Kabul-based Taliban government of providing sanctuary to these groups.

On Wednesday night, Pakistan’s Information Minister, Ataullah Tarar, announced via social media that military operations against Afghanistan would be temporarily suspended from midnight Wednesday until midnight Monday. Tarar added that the decision was made at the request of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey, “in the spirit of brotherhood and respect for Muslim nations during the conclusion of Ramadan.”

However, Tarar stressed that the suspension is conditional. “Any cross-border attacks, drone strikes, or terrorist incidents within Pakistan will prompt an immediate resumption of military operations against Afghanistan,” he warned.

In a reciprocal move, Afghanistan’s Taliban government also announced a temporary halt in military actions against Pakistan. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the decision, indicating a cautious effort to de-escalate tensions.

The conflict has its roots in long-standing mutual distrust. Once allies, Islamabad and Kabul became adversaries after Pakistan accused the Afghan government of harbouring militant groups targeting Pakistani territory. Tensions had eased temporarily through mediation by China and other international actors but escalated last month when Pakistan began directly targeting Taliban positions across Afghanistan, moving beyond its previous focus on border areas.

The recent ceasefire, although temporary, is seen as a critical gesture to reduce civilian casualties and prevent further escalation during a sensitive period for the region. Analysts note that the coming days will test the durability of this fragile truce.
