Former three-star General and ex-MP of Feni-3, Masud Uddin Chowdhury, has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Bangladesh Police. Notably prominent during the caretaker government backed by the military, the retired general was taken into custody late Monday night (23 March) from his residence in Baridhara, DOHS, Dhaka, following a targeted DB operation.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch chief, Shafiqul Islam, confirmed the arrest, stating, “A special DB operation was conducted in Dhaka late on Monday, resulting in the apprehension of General Masud from 153, Lane 2, Baridhara DOHS.” While he mentioned that the former MP faces “around five” pending cases, he refrained from providing further details of the legal proceedings.
General Masud’s career in public service has been marked by both military and diplomatic roles. In 2007, while serving as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Ninth Infantry Division, he played a significant role as Coordinator of the National Coordination Committee for Combating Serious Crimes following the political changes of the so-called ‘One-Eleven’ caretaker government.
In June 2008, he was appointed Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Australia, a position he retained until June 2011, even after the Awami League assumed power in 2009.
Transitioning to politics, Masud joined the Jatiya Party in 2018 and was elected to the 11th Jatiya Sangsad representing Feni-3, encompassing the Sonagazi and Daganbhuiyan constituencies. Interestingly, he initially filed nomination papers as an Awami League candidate for the same seat, but within five days switched allegiance, securing the Jatiya Party nomination. Subsequently, he was appointed a member of the party’s Presidium, highlighting his rapid rise within political ranks.
A brief overview of Masud Uddin Chowdhury’s career is presented below:
| Year | Position | Key Role / Achievement |
|---|---|---|
| 2007 | GOC, Ninth Infantry Division | Coordinator, National Committee for Combating Serious Crimes (post-One-Eleven) |
| 2008–2011 | High Commissioner, Australia | Represented Bangladesh diplomatically under successive governments |
| 2018 | MP, Feni-3 (Jatiya Party) | Elected to 11th Jatiya Sangsad; joined Presidium shortly after joining party |
Observers note that General Masud’s arrest may reignite debates about the intersection of military influence and politics in Bangladesh, especially considering his central role during the politically charged One-Eleven period. Legal experts emphasise the importance of due process, given the pending cases linked to his tenure in public office.
The development also places Feni-3’s political landscape under scrutiny, as constituents and political analysts monitor how this high-profile arrest could affect both local representation and broader party dynamics. As investigations progress, further updates are expected to clarify the nature of the allegations and potential legal proceedings.
This arrest underscores ongoing efforts to hold prominent figures accountable while reflecting the enduring influence of military-era officials in the country’s political sphere.
