The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced the indefinite postponement of the official draw for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup finals, which was originally scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 11 April. The decision has been taken amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, with organisers citing the need to ensure smooth and secure participation for all stakeholders.
The 24-team tournament, set to be hosted by Saudi Arabia, remains scheduled to take place from 7 January to 5 February next year. However, the draw—an important procedural event determining group allocations—will now be rearranged at a later date yet to be confirmed by the governing body.
In an official statement issued on 26 March, the AFC said the postponement was made “to ensure hassle-free attendance for all concerned parties,” without providing further details regarding a revised schedule.
The postponement comes against a backdrop of heightened instability in the Middle East. Since February, tensions have escalated following reported joint strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets, prompting a wider cycle of regional conflict. Subsequent retaliatory actions, including reported Iranian attacks on United States-linked facilities in Saudi Arabia, have further intensified security concerns across the Gulf.
As a result, several international sporting events across the region have either been cancelled or rescheduled in recent months, as organisers reassess travel safety, diplomatic risks and logistical feasibility.
Saudi Arabia, which is preparing to stage the continent’s premier football tournament for the first time since being awarded hosting rights, has not been exempt from these concerns, despite its extensive preparations and infrastructure commitments.
While confirming the postponement, the AFC has not yet announced a new date for the draw. The governing body has indicated only that an alternative schedule will be communicated in due course, leaving participating nations in a temporary state of uncertainty regarding group-stage planning.
The draw would have officially determined the composition of groups for the expanded 24-team format, which marks a continuation of the competition’s modern structure following its enlargement from 16 teams in previous editions.

Despite the disruption to preparatory events, the AFC has reiterated that the tournament itself remains on schedule. Saudi Arabia is expected to host matches across multiple cities, continuing its broader strategy of positioning itself as a global hub for major sporting events.
With 21 of the 24 participating teams already confirmed, attention had been building towards the draw as a key milestone in the competition build-up. However, the current postponement underscores how regional instability continues to impact even high-profile international sporting calendars.
For now, organisers, teams and supporters must wait for further clarity as the AFC reassesses conditions before confirming when the tournament’s official group-stage structure will finally be decided.
