Iran has asserted that its armed forces have achieved significant success in countering hostile aerial operations, claiming the destruction of over 160 enemy drones, alongside several advanced fighter jets and dozens of cruise missiles.
According to Brigadier General Ali Reza Elhami, who inspected air defence positions operated jointly by the Iranian Army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iranian units have successfully intercepted and destroyed a wide range of aerial threats in recent operations. He stated that among the downed unmanned aerial vehicles were high-end models such as the MQ-9 Reaper, Hermes reconnaissance drones, and Lucas-type systems, which are widely regarded as part of modern surveillance and strike capabilities.
Elhami emphasised that these achievements demonstrate what he described as the collapse of “fabricated propaganda” by adversarial forces. He further claimed that Iranian air defence units remain in a constant state of readiness, effectively lying in wait for hostile aircraft and drones attempting to breach Iranian airspace.
He added that the reported downing of several fourth- and fifth-generation fighter jets was evidence of Iran’s evolving defensive capabilities, citing tactical expertise, innovative use of modern equipment, and improved coordination between different branches of air defence systems. According to him, these developments have caused confusion and disruption within opposing military forces.
Elhami also stressed that the air defence network operated jointly by the Iranian Army and the IRGC functions as a unified structure, fully committed to safeguarding the country’s airspace “at any cost.” He underlined that operational coordination and integration between the two forces have significantly enhanced response times and interception success rates.
The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions. Iranian officials recalled that following reported attacks on senior leadership figures and military personnel in late February, the United States and Israel launched a broader military campaign across the region. These operations, according to Iranian statements, resulted in extensive damage to both military infrastructure and civilian areas, as well as significant casualties.
In response, Iran’s armed forces have reportedly conducted retaliatory strikes targeting US and Israeli positions across the Middle East, including military installations in regional bases. The situation has contributed to escalating hostilities, with both sides continuing to expand their aerial and missile activities.
| Category of Target | Reported Outcome | Details | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enemy drones | 160+ destroyed | Includes MQ-9, Hermes, Lucas models | Surveillance and strike UAVs |
| Fighter jets | Multiple aircraft | 4th and 5th generation aircraft | Exact numbers undisclosed |
| Cruise missiles | Dozens intercepted | Long-range precision missiles | Neutralised by air defence systems |
Iran maintains that its air defence network remains on high alert, and that continued integration of its military systems has strengthened its ability to counter increasingly sophisticated aerial threats in the region.
