One Injured in Galachipa Petrol Shop Fire

A sudden fire at a petrol shop in Galachipa Municipality of Patuakhali has left one man seriously injured after he sustained severe burn wounds, prompting a rapid response from local residents and fire service teams on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred at around 7:00 pm on 7 April in the Shyamlibagh area along Animal Hospital Road within the municipal limits of Galachipa. The establishment, which was reportedly involved in storing and selling petroleum products, caught fire under circumstances that remain unclear, causing panic among nearby residents and shopkeepers.

Victim identified as local resident

The injured man has been identified as 42-year-old Suman Gazi, a local resident who was present inside the premises at the time of the blaze. According to eyewitness accounts, the fire broke out suddenly without warning and quickly intensified due to the presence of highly flammable materials.

At the time of the incident, Mr Gazi was reportedly resting at the rear section of the shop. He sustained serious burn injuries before managing to escape the flames with assistance from nearby residents, who rushed to the scene and pulled him to safety.

Emergency response and rescue operation

Shortly after the fire erupted, locals alerted the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence. Two firefighting units from the Galachipa station were dispatched to the scene and worked alongside residents to bring the blaze under control.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire within a relatively short period, preventing it from spreading to adjacent shops and residential structures in the densely populated area.

Following the rescue operation, the injured man was taken to Galachipa Upazila Health Complex for initial treatment. Due to the severity of his burns, attending doctors later referred him to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care.

Eyewitness accounts and official statement

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as flames rapidly engulfed the shop, fuelled by stored petroleum products. Some locals attempted to control the fire using available resources before firefighters arrived, but the intensity of the blaze made early containment extremely difficult.

A station officer from the Galachipa Fire Service and Civil Defence, Kamal Hossain, confirmed that two units responded immediately after receiving the emergency call. He stated that firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading further, although significant damage had already occurred inside the shop.

He further added that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined and that an investigation is underway. Authorities have not ruled out accidental causes.

Safety concerns raised

The incident has renewed concerns over the storage and handling of flammable substances in densely populated municipal areas. Local residents have called for stricter monitoring of fuel-related businesses, along with improved fire safety measures and enforcement of regulations to prevent similar incidents.

Officials are expected to conduct a detailed inspection of the affected site and surrounding establishments as part of standard post-incident procedures. Meanwhile, Mr Gazi remains under medical supervision, with doctors describing his condition as serious due to extensive burn injuries.
