“Dhaka Medical Clash Over Unavailable Emergency Injections”

A tense confrontation erupted at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday (8 April) after a medical student from University of Dhaka allegedly became involved in a physical altercation with doctors over the unavailability of prescribed emergency medication.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when Sanim, a student of the Department of Botany (2023–24 academic session), was admitted to the emergency unit suffering from acute pancreatitis. Following initial examination, attending physicians prescribed three injectable medicines deemed necessary for urgent treatment. However, the situation escalated when the prescribed drugs could not be obtained.

Prescribed Medicines and Availability

Medicine Name Intended Use Context Availability Status (Reported)
Algin Pain management support in acute conditions Not available in hospital; unavailable in nearby pharmacies
Nalban-2 Analgesic injection used in severe pain cases Reported shortage in local market
Cosec Acid suppression / supportive treatment Reported out of stock in surrounding pharmacies

According to sources within the hospital, the prescribed injections were not available in the DMCH pharmacy at the time of treatment. The attending emergency medical officer reportedly advised the patient to procure the medicines externally. However, repeated attempts by the student and his classmates to locate the drugs in pharmacies surrounding the hospital were unsuccessful.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that frustration over the inability to secure urgent medication quickly escalated into a heated exchange between the student and on-duty medical staff. The situation then deteriorated into a physical confrontation, with both sides reportedly involved in scuffles inside the emergency area.

A doctor working in the emergency department stated that the medications had been prescribed out of clinical necessity but acknowledged that the unavailability of the injections in the local market had not been anticipated at the time of prescription. This gap between prescription practice and supply reality is believed to have contributed significantly to the misunderstanding.

Pharmacists operating near DMCH also confirmed that the injections in question had been unavailable for the past three to four days, raising concerns about supply chain disruptions for essential emergency medicines in the area.

Administrative Response and Emergency Meeting

Following the incident, an emergency meeting was convened at around 7:45 pm in the administrative block of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Representatives from multiple bodies attended, including officials from the Directorate General of Health Services, hospital administration, the proctorial team of University of Dhaka, senior police officials, and student representatives.

Preliminary discussions reportedly focused on forming an investigation committee to determine the circumstances that led to the altercation. Authorities are also expected to review both clinical procedures and communication protocols within the emergency department.

Broader Concerns Over Emergency Drug Supply

The incident has once again highlighted persistent concerns over the availability of essential injectable medicines in public hospital systems. Emergency physicians often rely on immediate access to specific drugs for acute care, and shortages can create significant delays in treatment.

Healthcare professionals familiar with the situation noted that discrepancies between prescribed emergency medications and actual market availability can create confusion for patients and families, particularly in high-pressure clinical environments such as emergency units.

The clash has therefore raised wider questions about coordination between hospital pharmacies, private suppliers, and emergency prescribing practices, particularly in high-volume public medical facilities like DMCH.

Investigation Underway

As of the latest updates, authorities are continuing to gather statements from both medical staff and student representatives. The investigation committee is expected to assess whether procedural gaps, communication failures, or supply shortages contributed to the escalation.

The incident has sparked broader debate within the medical and academic communities about patient management in emergency settings and the importance of ensuring that prescribed life-saving medicines are readily accessible within hospital networks.
