Indian rapper and music composer Badshah has issued an unconditional apology after his latest Haryanvi track “Tattiri” sparked widespread controversy over its alleged objectification of women. The song, released a few weeks ago, triggered legal complaints, public outrage, and scrutiny from women’s rights bodies across India.
The controversy erupted shortly after the release of the track on 1 March, when it was published across Badshah’s official social media platforms. Initially, the song received a positive response from fans; however, this quickly shifted as critics highlighted its lyrics and visuals, accusing the production of portraying women in a degrading and sexually suggestive manner. The backlash intensified when several First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed in Haryana, and the Haryana State Commission for Women intervened formally.
The commission summoned Badshah along with members of the production team, including the video director, producer, and other collaborators. The matter was also reviewed in the presence of senior officials from the National Commission for Women India, whose chairperson Vijay Rahatkar reiterated that any content undermining the dignity of women would not be tolerated.
During the hearing held on Tuesday, Badshah appeared before the commission and submitted a written apology. He also assured officials that he would refrain from creating or endorsing any content that could be interpreted as disrespectful towards women. According to statements made during the proceedings, he further pledged to produce a positive song focusing on women’s empowerment within the next four months.
| Date/Period | Event | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 1 March | “Tattiri” released on social platforms | Initial positive reception from fans |
| Following days | Criticism over lyrics and visuals | Public backlash and media scrutiny |
| Within 2 weeks | FIRs filed in Haryana | Police investigation initiated |
| Mid-investigation | Women’s commission intervenes | Official summons issued |
| Hearing day (Tuesday) | Apology submitted before commission | Assurance of corrective future work |
The controversy deepened due to specific scenes in the music video, which reportedly depicted schoolgirls dancing in a suggestive manner after removing their shoulder bags, accompanied by provocative choreography and lyrics. These visuals were widely condemned as inappropriate and harmful, especially given the involvement of young female characters.
In response, the Haryana Women’s Commission escalated the matter to law enforcement authorities. Acting on the complaint, police reportedly removed over 850 online links associated with the video across various platforms to limit its circulation.
Public reaction has been sharply divided. While some supporters defended the artistic freedom of the rapper, many social commentators, activists, and political figures criticised the portrayal of women in the video. Among them, Aparna Yadav, a public figure from Uttar Pradesh, reportedly wrote to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath requesting a ban on the song within the state.
During the commission proceedings, officials reiterated that the entertainment industry carries a responsibility to uphold social values and protect dignity in creative expressions. Badshah, in his statement, acknowledged these concerns and expressed regret for the controversy caused.
The case continues to draw attention as discussions around artistic expression, censorship, and gender representation in Indian popular music intensify.
