M. Yakub Ali, the President of the Chattogram South District unit of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), has officially announced his retirement from active politics. The senior politician disclosed his decision through a formal statement posted on his verified Facebook page on the afternoon of Sunday, 12 April.
In his public statement, Mr Ali confirmed that he is stepping down from his leadership role and all subsequent political activities. He cited a combination of contemporary realities, personal and family obligations, and increasing professional commitments as the primary drivers behind his departure.
According to his statement, the decision marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in his life. He noted that while politics remained a core part of his identity, his current circumstances necessitated a shift in focus. He requested the well-wishes and continued cooperation of his supporters and the general public as he transitions into private life.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mr Ali emphasised that he consistently prioritised ideological consistency and broader unity over personal advancement. He stated that true politics involves making sacrifices for the greater national interest.
The outgoing President expressed satisfaction with his contributions to both his party and the nation. Although he will no longer hold a formal political office or participate in direct partisan activities, he affirmed his commitment to the welfare of society. He intends to remain involved in social development and community service in a non-political capacity.

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) was founded in 2006, primarily by Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed, following a split from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The party has historically maintained a significant presence in the Chattogram region. As the head of the Chattogram South District unit, Mr Ali held a strategic position within the party’s organisational structure, overseeing one of its most critical regional strongholds.
His resignation comes at a time when the party continues to navigate the complex political landscape of Bangladesh. Mr Ali’s departure represents a notable change in the local leadership hierarchy of the LDP, as he was a key figure in coordinating district-level operations and maintaining the party’s ideological framework in the region.
The formal withdrawal of such a senior district official typically requires the party’s central committee to appoint an acting president or organise a council to fill the vacancy. Mr Ali has not indicated any conflict with the central leadership, framing his exit solely as a personal and professional necessity.
