The Bengali New Year, Pahela Baishakh 1433, is set to commence following the conclusion of the current day. This traditional festival remains a cornerstone of Bengali culture, marked by extensive preparations across the nation. As the populace prepares to transition from the grievances of the previous year to the aspirations of the new one, festive arrangements are being finalised in both rural and urban sectors.
While global geopolitical instability persists, the local atmosphere is focused on cultural continuity. Traditional festivities, including “Baishakhi Melas” (fairs) in villages and various cultural processions in cities, are scheduled to take place. Despite a general decline in the commercial dominance of traditional pottery, artisans—particularly potters—have reported a significant increase in activity as demand for festive earthenware rises.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), a mild to moderate heatwave is currently affecting several regions. On Monday, 13 April, this heatwave was observed over the districts of Dhaka, Tangail, Sirajganj, Pabna, Rajshahi, and Faridpur, as well as across ten districts within the Khulna division.
Official records indicate that the highest temperature in the country was documented last Saturday in Jashore, reaching $38.2^\circ\text{C}$. The prevailing weather patterns suggest that these high temperatures may persist into the New Year celebrations.
Meteorologist Md. Tariful Newaz Kabir has provided specific insights regarding the weather expectations for the first day of the Bengali New Year. While the sky is expected to remain partially cloudy across the country, a significant nationwide rainfall event is unlikely.
In the capital city, Dhaka, the probability of rain remains low, though isolated or scattered showers cannot be entirely ruled out. The Sylhet region holds the highest probability of precipitation. Furthermore, there are slight possibilities of rainfall in the Chattogram and Barishal divisions. The BMD anticipates that both day and night temperatures may rise slightly on Pahela Baishakh, with the heatwave conditions likely to continue.
| Region/Division | Prevailing Condition | Rainfall Probability |
| Dhaka | Mild Heatwave | Low (Scattered only) |
| Rajshahi & Pabna | Moderate Heatwave | Very Low |
| Khulna Division | Mild to Moderate Heatwave | Very Low |
| Sylhet Division | Partially Cloudy | Likely |
| Chattogram | Partially Cloudy | Slight Possibility |
| Barishal | Partially Cloudy | Slight Possibility |
| Jashore | Extreme Heat (Ref: $38.2^\circ\text{C}$) | Very Low |
The transition to the Bengali New Year often coincides with the pre-monsoon season, characterised by “Kalbaishakhi” (Nor’westers). However, the current data suggests that thermal discomfort due to the heatwave is the primary meteorological factor for 1433. The BMD continues to monitor atmospheric pressure changes that could lead to localized storms, but the primary trend remains high temperatures and dry conditions for the majority of the western and central districts. Total cloud cover is expected to be minimal, allowing for high UV exposure during peak festive hours.
