A brief video clip showing the public slaughter of a deer in broad daylight at a sensitive ecological zone in Mirsharai, Chattogram, has triggered widespread condemnation after circulating on social media.
The seven-second footage, which went viral on Tuesday night (14 April), is believed to have been recorded on 11 April in the Tekehat Badamtoli area under Ichakhali Union, within the vicinity of the National Special Economic Zone. The disturbing visuals have sparked intense debate among local residents, conservation advocates, and authorities, with many calling for swift legal action against those involved.
In the video, a spotted deer—locally known as a chital or deer species commonly found in mangrove ecosystems—can be seen being restrained and slaughtered beside a waterbody. One individual is seen holding the animal’s legs while another uses a sharp blade to cut its throat. A dog is visible nearby, standing in the shallow water, while another person watches from a short distance. The footage further shows the moment when the individuals noticed someone recording them, after which one of them appears to move aggressively towards the camera holder.
Local sources and forest officials have stated that the animal is likely to have strayed from remaining forest patches in the coastal belt. Once part of a rich mangrove ecosystem stretching across approximately 20 kilometres of the Mirsharai coastal region, the area was historically home to deer, jackals, snakes, fishing cats, and other wildlife. However, large-scale land acquisition and industrial development linked to the National Special Economic Zone have significantly reduced forest cover, pushing wildlife into fragmented habitats and increasing human-wildlife conflict.
Officials from the Forest Department believe that the deer may have been separated from its herd before being killed. Preliminary findings suggest that three individuals were involved in the incident, which took place at some point on 11 April but only came to public attention after the video spread online.
According to the Mirsharai Forest Range authorities, an investigation has already been launched to identify and apprehend those responsible. Officials confirmed that efforts are underway to detain the suspects and initiate legal proceedings under wildlife protection laws.
