A cloud of grief has descended upon the village of Gobardanga in Kaliganj Upazila, Jhenaidah, following the horrific news of the double murder of a Bangladeshi expatriate businessman and his female companion in Malaysia. The victim, identified as Nazrul Islam, was reportedly targeted due to a long-standing and bitter commercial dispute with local partners. His family alleges that not only was he hacked to death with sharp weapons, but his remains were also set ablaze in a gruesome attempt to conceal the crime.
The incident, which occurred on the night of Tuesday, 14 April, also claimed the life of Kohinoor Begum, a Bangladeshi national and close acquaintance of Nazrul, who was present at the scene at the time of the attack.

Nazrul Islam migrated to Malaysia in 2018 in search of a better livelihood. Through sheer determination and hard work over six years, he established a flourishing agricultural enterprise. His farm was diverse, housing cattle, goats, ducks, and chickens; he even maintained a sanctuary for cats and dogs. His success, however, reportedly bred resentment among his local business associates.
According to his family, Nazrul had recently decided to liquidate his assets and return to Bangladesh permanently. He had begun the process of selling off his livestock and settling his affairs. Ironically, it was during this final phase of his stay in Malaysia that the threats against his life escalated.
The victim’s elder brother, Zahirul Islam, shared a chilling account of the warnings Nazrul had given them.
“He had informed us previously that he was having severe issues with his business partners. He mentioned that there had been several attempts on his life already. We begged him to leave everything and return home immediately. He told us, ‘Just a few more days, I am wrapping everything up.’ I cannot reconcile with the fact that my brother was taken from us in such a barbaric manner.”
The emotional toll is equally heavy on the younger members of the family. Nazrul’s niece, Sadia Islam Mim, recounted her last conversation with her uncle through tears.
“My uncle told me, ‘I have sold everything. I am coming home very soon and I will bring many gifts for you.’ Those words are still ringing in my ears. We do not want anything else now; we simply want justice for my uncle’s murder and the opportunity to see his body one last time to say our final goodbyes.”
The local authorities in Bangladesh have expressed their sympathies but noted the jurisdictional complexities of the case. Zellal Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, commented on the situation, stating that while the incident is deeply sensitive and tragic, the primary investigation must be handled by the Malaysian authorities where the crime was committed.
He further explained that for the repatriation of the bodies and the pursuit of a legal case, the family must coordinate through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, and the local district administration.
The incident has highlighted the vulnerabilities of expatriate entrepreneurs working abroad. As the Malaysian police continue their investigation into the double homicide and the subsequent arson, the community in Jhenaidah awaits the return of a man who left as a dreamer and returned as a victim of senseless violence.
