Fifteen Truck Accident Victims Handled In Tangail District

The bodies of fifteen individuals who lost their lives in a major road accident in Kalihati, Tangail, have been formally handed over to their respective families following the completion of mandated legal and administrative procedures. On Monday evening, at approximately 7:30 pm, police authorities officially transferred the deceased from the Tangail General Hospital morgue to their waiting relatives. A large gathering of deeply affected family members, neighbours, and acquaintances assembled on the hospital premises to receive the remains and view their loved ones for the final time.

According to verified reports compiled by the Fire Service and Civil Defence alongside local police units, the vast majority of the fifteen casualties were permanent residents of the Naogaon district located within the northern region of the country. A detailed geographic breakdown reveals that ten of the deceased hailed from Naogaon, two were from Chapainawabganj, and one individual came from each of the districts of Rajshahi, Kushtia, and Natore. Investigations into the backgrounds of the victims established that they were itinerant vendors and hawkers by profession, who regularly travelled to various regions of the country to trade in discarded hair and scrap mobile telephone components.

• Hasan Ali, from the Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia district

Mechanics of the Accident and Driver Flight

The fatal highway accident occurred during the early hours of Monday on the busy Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Highway, specifically within the jurisdiction of the Kalihati upazila. A northern-bound commercial truck, heavily laden with iron rods, completely lost control whilst navigating the highway stretch, causing the vehicle to overturn violently. Because the victims were travelling as passengers aboard the cargo-laden vehicle, all fifteen individuals suffered fatal trauma and died directly at the crash scene.

Immediately following the catastrophic rollover, the driver of the truck and his assistant (helper) fled the site to evade law enforcement. Police units arriving at the scene confirmed that both individuals remain at large.

The Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station, Abdul Hannan, officially confirmed the successful completion of the body handover process to the press. The officer stated that after the painstaking process of identity verification was completed with the assistance of relatives, the police observed all necessary legal protocols before releasing the bodies for burial.

Sub-Inspector Abdul Hannan further noted that whilst the primary focus on Monday was the dignified return of the deceased to their families, parallel operational measures are underway. Specialised police teams have initiated an exhaustive investigation to determine the exact mechanical or human failures that caused the heavy vehicle to lose control.

Concurrently, law enforcement operations have been intensified across neighbouring districts to track down, apprehend, and detain the fugitive truck driver and his helper. The authorities concluded by stating that the preparation of a formal criminal case regarding reckless driving and causing multiple fatalities is currently being finalised at the police station.
