Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that talismanic captain Lionel Messi will not be operating at maximum physical fitness when he reports for international duty ahead of the upcoming World Cup. The announcement follows Messi’s forced substitution during his final domestic match for Inter Miami, during which he experienced hamstring discomfort.
Although subsequent medical evaluations conducted by Inter Miami’s clinical team revealed no structural damage or muscle tears, the Major League Soccer franchise confirmed that the forward left the pitch due to acute muscle fatigue.
The injury scare occurred in the 73rd minute of Inter Miami’s ten-goal thriller against the Philadelphia Union. Messi’s early departure initially triggered extensive concern among the national team’s supporters regarding his physical readiness for Argentina’s title-defence campaign.
Speaking in a broadcast interview with DSports, Scaloni provided an official update on his captain’s physical state, indicating that patience is required despite the encouraging early diagnostic reports.
“The initial information we received is not bad at all,” the World Cup-winning manager explained. “Now we must wait to see how the injury evolves. We are waiting for the next round of medical examinations to see if they confirm the findings of the initial diagnostic reports.”
Argentina are scheduled to begin their group stage campaign on 16 June 2026 against Algeria. While Scaloni remains hopeful that Messi will feature in the opening fixture, he revealed that several key members of the national squad are currently dealing with varying physical limitations.
The logistical parameters of Messi’s medical status and Argentina’s opening tournament schedule are organised in the table below:
| Tournament Variable | Documented Roster and Match Details | Institutional Oversight |
| Squad Captain | Lionel Messi (Forward, Inter Miami) | Argentine Football Association (AFA) |
| Official Diagnosis | Muscle fatigue; hamstring discomfort | Inter Miami CF Medical Staff |
| Match Context | Substituted in 73rd minute vs Philadelphia Union | Major League Soccer Fixture |
| Opening Fixture | Argentina vs Algeria (16 June 2026) | FIFA World Cup Group Stage |
| Technical Focus | Workload management and rehabilitation | National Coaching Staff |
Scaloni emphasized that the technical team’s primary focus remains on managing the recovery timelines of multiple players across the roster rather than focusing solely on one individual. “We all want Messi to join the squad completely fit,” Scaloni added. “But the reality is quite different. It is not just him; many of our players have not yet fully recovered from their respective injuries. Our absolute priority is ensuring their proper rehabilitation so they can compete at the World Cup in the best possible condition.”
