Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed growing speculation surrounding Neymar’s availability for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, confirming that the forward will remain with the squad. Speaking to the press ahead of a preparatory friendly against Panama, the veteran Italian coach emphasised that Neymar’s place in the team is secure and that no backup player will be drafted into the squad.
The Brazilian national team has been based in Rio de Janeiro since 27 May to undergo their official pre-tournament training camp. However, due to lingering physical issues, Neymar has been unable to participate in outdoor sessions alongside the rest of the squad.
Ancelotti revealed that before the final squad announcement, the national team’s technical staff had been formally alerted by Neymar’s club regarding an oedema—a swelling-related issue. Despite the physical setback, the manager expressed complete faith in the 34-year-old’s recovery process and state of mind.
“We believe he will recover as quickly as possible. Mentally, he is in very good spirits.”
This managerial stance offers a more optimistic outlook than the one provided by the head of the Brazilian medical team, Dr Rodrigo Lasmar. Dr Lasmar had previously estimated that the attacker would require a two-to-three-week layoff. If that timeline holds true, Neymar would be forced to miss Brazil’s opening Group C fixture against Morocco on 13 June.
Ancelotti does not anticipate such a lengthy delay. He explicitly rejected the idea of calling up an alternative player, confirming that Neymar will complete his recovery within the team environment.
“Neymar will stay with us until he is fully recovered. We think he could be ready for the first match of the World Cup. If he cannot make it, he will be ready for the second match. It is certain that no replacement will be taken in his place.”
The handling of the forward’s injury has sparked a lively debate within Brazilian football circles. Public scrutiny has arisen because Ancelotti had previously stated that he would not include anyone who was not entirely fit. Critics have questioned why Neymar received an exemption while other players were left out.
Ancelotti defended his selection process by clarifying his original comments regarding match fitness:
“I spoke about being physically 100 per cent fit, but I probably did not explain myself clearly enough. What I meant was that I could call up someone who would become fit in time for the World Cup. Unfortunately, Eder Militão, Rodrygo, and Estêvão will not be fully fit by that time.”
The five-time World Cup winners have been placed in Group C for the tournament. Following their initial encounter against Morocco, Brazil will face Haiti on 19 June before wrapping up their group commitments against Scotland on 24 June.
