The Bangladesh national women’s football team faces a significant tactical reshuffle ahead of their crucial SAFF Women’s Championship fixture against India tonight. Afeida Khandakar, a mainstay of the national team’s defence, has been dropped from the starting line-up for this high-stakes encounter. This tactical omission marks a challenging period for the 20-year-old defender from Satkhira, who was also recently relieved of her captaincy duties.
According to team sources, the decision was finalised during a team meeting this afternoon. Head coach Peter Butler explicitly informed the defender, stating, “You are not in the starting eleven today.” Afeida’s exclusion follows intense scrutiny over defensive lapses during Bangladesh’s opening match against the Maldives, where she was held responsible for the errors that led to the concession of the opponents’ second goal. Signs of her impending omission became apparent during recent training sessions, where Surma Janat was consistently deployed in Afeida’s usual position with the first team. Butler has confirmed that Surma Janat will take Afeida’s place in the starting line-up against India.
Since making her international debut against Singapore in December 2023, Afeida had established herself as an indispensable asset to the national squad. In the absence of senior defenders Akhi Khatun and Masura Parvin, she successfully anchored the backline. Her leadership qualities also saw her captain the Bangladesh Under-20 national team. Remarkably, this omission marks the very first time in her career that she has been dropped from the squad due to performance issues, ending a substantial streak of consecutive appearances.

Aside from the inclusion of Surma Janat, there were internal team discussions regarding the potential return of defender Sheuli Azim to the starting eleven. However, coach Butler has chosen to retain his trust in Kohati Kisku, who featured in the previous match. Butler’s tactical assessment suggests that Kohati is better suited than Sheuli to contain the specific Indian attacker operating on that flank. Team sources have revealed that Butler deferred a definitive conclusion regarding Sheuli during the afternoon meeting, choosing to take more time before finalising his tactical arrangements.
The match, scheduled for an 8:00 pm kick-off tonight, serves as a direct decider for the top spot in the group. Both Bangladesh and India have already secured their places in the semi-finals courtesy of victories in their respective opening fixtures. However, the requirements to claim the group championship differ significantly for both sides. To qualify as group winners, Bangladesh must secure a victory against India tonight. Conversely, a draw will suffice for India to progress as group champions.
