Former England midfielder James Milner has officially announced his retirement from professional football. The 40-year-old veteran concludes a distinguished playing career after spending his final three seasons with Brighton & Hove Albion. Having commenced his senior career at Leeds United, Milner competed in the Premier League for a remarkable 24 consecutive seasons.
Record-Breaking Career and Retirement Statement
Milner secured the record for the most appearances in Premier League history this past February during a fixture for Brighton against Brentford. He officially ends his career with a total of 658 Premier League appearances. In a statement released via his Instagram account, Milner reflected on his departure:
“After 24 seasons in the Premier League, I feel now is the right time to bring my playing career to an end.”
The midfielder, who won the UEFA Champions League during his tenure with Liverpool, further detailed his journey:
“I made my debut at the age of 16 for my boyhood club Leeds United, and became the youngest goalscorer in the Premier League at the time. I could never have imagined my career would be so long and eventful. Last year, there were times when I couldn’t even lift my legs properly. To come back from that and, at 40 years old, be part of the Brighton team that secured European football for only the second time in the club’s history is incredibly special.”
Milner represented England at international level, featuring in two UEFA European Championships and two FIFA World Cups. Reflecting on the milestones of his career, he added:
“I’ve experienced so many unforgettable moments—fighting relegation, winning trophies, and playing on the European stage. But more valuable than anything are the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve formed along the way. I will cherish those forever. I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude, and a lifetime of memories. Football has given me things I never could have dreamed of, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it provided.”
Premier League Appearance Milestones
Milner is one of only four players to have surpassed the milestone of 600 appearances in the Premier League. He surpassed the previous record held by Gareth Barry, who accumulated 653 appearances across spells with Aston Villa, Manchester City, Everton, and West Bromwich Albion. Notably, no goalkeepers feature in the exclusive 600-appearance club; David James holds the record for the most appearances by a goalkeeper, ranking fifth overall.
The table below outlines the top five players with the most appearances in Premier League history:
| Player | Total Appearances | Clubs Represented |
| James Milner | 658 | Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Albion |

Club Breakdown, Goals, and Statistics
Milner made 48 Premier League appearances for his childhood club, Leeds United. It was during this period, at the age of 16 years and 356 days, that he became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at the time, whilst also being the second-youngest player to feature in the league. He currently remains second on the all-time youngest goalscorers list, behind James Vaughan (16 years and 271 days).
Following his time at Leeds, Milner made 94 appearances for Newcastle United and 100 for Aston Villa. His tenure at Aston Villa included a 27-match loan spell during the 2005–06 season prior to completing a permanent transfer in 2008.

At Liverpool, he spent eight seasons, making 230 appearances while winning an additional Premier League title and a Champions League trophy.
Milner transitioned to Brighton in the summer of 2023, subsequently making 39 appearances. However, his 2024–25 campaign was severely restricted by injury, limiting him to just four appearances across the entire season.

Liverpool: 19 goals
Manchester City: 13 goals
Aston Villa: 12 goals (including his loan spell)
