The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to establish a historic milestone, with the number of players aged 40 or older reaching an unprecedented total of eight. This represents the largest group of veteran footballers ever included in a single edition of the tournament. Remarkably, from the inaugural World Cup in 1930 up until the current cycle, only eight players aged 40 and above had ever been registered across all previous tournaments combined.
This statistical finding was brought to light following an extensive analysis by the Brazilian media outlet O Globo, which evaluated the official registration documents of the 1,248 footballers participating in the 2026 tournament. The eight senior players identified by the study are Craig Gordon, Cristiano Ronaldo, Guillermo Ochoa, Luka Modrić, Edin Džeko, Manuel Neuer, Josimar Díaz, and Fernando Muslera.
An evaluation of the veteran cohort reveals a high concentration of defensive specialisation, with five of the eight registered individuals operating as goalkeepers. This specific defensive sub-group consists of Gordon, Ochoa, Neuer, Díaz, and Muslera. Within this group of shot-stoppers, Scotland’s Craig Gordon and Josimar Díaz are slated to make their definitive World Cup debuts.
At 43 years of age, Scotland’s goalkeeper Craig Gordon holds the distinction of being the oldest registered athlete in the 2026 competition. Team projections indicate that Gordon may serve as Scotland’s premier choice in goal. Scotland is scheduled to open its tournament campaign in Group C on 24 June 2026, facing Brazil in their first fixture.
Should Gordon take to the pitch, he will establish the record as the oldest active competitor in this specific edition. However, the absolute record for the oldest participant in FIFA World Cup history remains held by the former Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary, who competed in the 2018 World Cup at the age of 45 years and 161 days.
The second-oldest footballer featured in the analysis is the Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who is entering the tournament at 41 years of age. The 2026 campaign represents Ronaldo’s sixth consecutive World Cup selection. Mexico’s 40-year-old goalkeeper, Guillermo Ochoa, matches this exceptional milestone by securing his sixth career World Cup squad inclusion.
While a significant majority of professional footballers at this advanced stage of their careers transition to clubs outside the highest tier of global club competitions, two individuals from this group continue to compete within the primary European leagues. Of the eight players listed, only Croatia’s midfielder Luka Modrić (currently signed to AC Milan) and Germany’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (with Bayern Munich) are actively playing for clubs inside Europe’s top five domestic divisions.
