Former Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy has returned to her residence after being released on bail following 13 months in prison, drawing significant attention from political observers, supporters and local residents alike. Her return to the family home, known as Chunka Kutir in the Deobhog area of Narayanganj, has been accompanied by heightened security measures and a steady stream of visitors.
A visit to the residence on Thursday morning revealed groups of supporters gathering outside the property despite efforts by family members to limit visitor numbers for security reasons. Ivy was released from Kashimpur Central Women’s Prison in Gazipur at approximately 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday and arrived at her Narayanganj home shortly after midnight.
One of the most discussed developments following her release has been the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras around Chunka Kutir and several nearby locations. The move has attracted public interest, with many residents speculating about the purpose of the surveillance.
According to Narayanganj District Police, the cameras are part of a broader initiative to expand the city’s security infrastructure. Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Tarek Al Mehedi stated that authorities have long planned to bring Narayanganj Sadar under comprehensive CCTV coverage. Under the initiative, around 2,000 modern surveillance cameras are expected to be installed across the city. He explained that Ivy’s release also necessitated additional security arrangements to ensure her safety and to monitor any attempts by prohibited groups to gather in the area.
Despite restrictions on visitors, supporters from various districts and upazilas have continued to travel to Narayanganj to greet the former mayor. Several long-time associates and political colleagues were present at the residence, including former Narayanganj District Awami League Vice-President Abdul Kadir and former councillor Moniruzzaman Monir.
Relatives and close associates said Ivy spent much of her time in prison engaged in religious observance, including regular prayers and recitation. They described her period of incarceration as one of personal reflection, spiritual development and self-assessment. As a result, her first day after release was reportedly devoted largely to meeting well-wishers rather than discussing political plans or future programmes.

Dr Selina Hayat Ivy remains one of Bangladesh’s most prominent local government figures. She served as Mayor of Narayanganj Municipality from 2003 to 2011 and later secured victory in three consecutive elections after the formation of Narayanganj City Corporation, establishing herself as one of the country’s most recognisable local political leaders.
She was arrested from her Narayanganj residence on 9 May 2025. Subsequently, she was shown arrested in a total of 12 cases, including three murder cases and two attempted murder cases linked to the anti-discrimination student-led movement of 2024. Although she secured bail in several cases, additional cases resulted in her continued detention. Her release became possible after the High Court granted interim bail on 30 April in two murder cases filed with Siddhirganj Police Station.
For now, the atmosphere around Chunka Kutir reflects a combination of public curiosity, political significance and heightened security. While supporters continue to arrive to express solidarity, there has so far been little indication from Ivy herself regarding her immediate political future, leaving observers waiting to see what role she may choose to play in the coming months.
