Tamim Iqbal, the head of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) current ad hoc committee, cast his vote in the board election held at the BCB headquarters in Mirpur on Sunday, as the electoral process got underway amid relatively low early turnout.
Voting commenced at 10:00 am, but participation at the start of the day was modest, with officials noting that it took nearly 45 minutes for the first ballot to be cast. The gradual pace of voter arrival reflected a subdued beginning to one of the most closely watched cricket administrative elections in the country.
Tamim, participating as a councillor representing Old DOHS Club, exercised his franchise at approximately 11:35 am. Around the same time, former national team pacer Rubel Hossain also cast his vote, taking part as a Category-1 voter. Their presence added visibility to an election that has drawn significant attention, particularly regarding the contest within the club category.
This year’s BCB election is particularly notable for the competition in the club-based Category-2 segment, which has emerged as the focal point of the electoral battle. While several positions have already been decided uncontested, the most competitive race remains in this category, where established cricket figures and club representatives are vying for influence within the board’s governing structure.
According to election details, a total of 41 voters have been registered for electronic voting arrangements. This includes representatives from district and divisional sports associations as well as councillors from various Dhaka-based clubs. Despite the structured voting system, early indications suggested a cautious and slow engagement from participants during the opening hours.
In total, eight directors have already been elected unopposed in this year’s process. Of these, seven come from Category-1 and one from Category-3, reflecting a relatively settled outcome in those segments even before ballots were cast. However, attention remains firmly fixed on Category-2, where 12 director positions are being contested by 16 candidates, including high-profile names such as Tamim Iqbal himself and Fahim Sinha, representing Abahani Limited.
