Cristiano Ronaldo is currently preparing to participate in the upcoming World Cup at the age of 41. Expectations amongst supporters regarding the current Portuguese squad remain remarkably high. Amidst this anticipation, questions have arisen regarding the physical form of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner ahead of the international tournament.
Portugal contested an international friendly match against Chile yesterday in Lisbon. Whilst the host nation secured a 2-1 victory, Ronaldo featured on the pitch for only 45 minutes. During his first-half appearance, the forward failed to register a single goal or an assist. In fact, both of Portugal’s goals were scored after Ronaldo had been substituted.
Ronaldo’s individual statistics at the Estádio Nacional offered minimal encouragement. In the attacking third, he registered a mere 12 ball touches and entered the Chilean penalty area only three times. Out of the three shots he attempted during the match, one was on target, one went wide, and the third was blocked by the opposition defence. Most notably, his most promising opportunity of the game was disallowed for offside; he managed to find the back of the net in the 37th minute, but the goal was subsequently ruled out.
Despite these limitations, his performance included a few positive contributions. In the 11th minute of the match, Ronaldo delivered an exquisite backheel pass to Rafael Leão, though the attack did not yield a goal. The first half concluded on a contentious note when Leão was shown a red card following a physical altercation on the pitch.
During the half-time interval, the Portugal manager opted to substitute Ronaldo, introducing Gonçalo Guedes in his place. Guedes went on to break the deadlock, scoring Portugal’s opening goal in the 58th minute. Later, in the 75th minute, Bruno Fernandes doubled the lead for the hosts with a powerful long-range strike.
Evaluating the forward’s performance, the football media outlet Goal.com noted that apart from a clever backheel that released Leão down the left flank, Ronaldo remained an isolated figure for the majority of the game. The publication also highlighted that he squandered his easiest scoring opportunity by drifting into an offside position unnecessarily, adding that he would undoubtedly be frustrated to see his direct replacement find the net. Consequently, Goal.com awarded Ronaldo a match rating of 5 out of 10 for his performance against Chile.
For Portugal, the primary consolation remains that this fixture was a non-competitive friendly, and a single performance is not definitive proof of a player’s overall form. Portugal are placed in Group K for the upcoming World Cup, with their opening match scheduled for 17 June against DR Congo. The other two opponents in Group K are Colombia and Uzbekistan.
