The iconic poem Banalata Sen by the celebrated poet Jibanananda Das has been adapted for the silver screen. Directed by Masud Hasan Ujjwal, the feature film Banalata Sen was officially released during the Eid festival. The filmmaker constructed the narrative by drawing direct inspiration from the literary atmosphere and context of the classic poem. Since its theatrical release, the production has garnered significant acclaim from both cinephiles and film critics.
Joining the list of admirers is the popular contemporary vocalist Somnur Monir Konal, who expressed her profound admiration along with a sense of personal regret after viewing the film. On Saturday, 6 June, Konal shared a detailed post on her verified Facebook account to commend the director’s creative execution.
She expressed particular astonishment at the seamless integration of Jesus Christ and Rabindranath Tagore within the storyline. Describing Masud Hasan Ujjwal as a “genius” for this thematic synthesis, she extended her congratulations to the entire production team. Addressing her followers, she noted that Banalata Sen warrants viewing by both domestic and international audiences.
In her social media post, Konal reflected on her emotional and cultural experience:
“I watched the Eid movie Banalata Sen. For art lovers, it is like a colourful canvas. For the first time, I feel a deep regret—why did I not grow up in Bangladesh, why did I not read more Bengali literature, and why did I not explore Jibanananda more thoroughly before this?”
As a professional musician, Konal provided an explicit assessment of the film’s technical and musical attributes. She noted that the background score was subtle yet powerful, seamlessly blending with the visual sequences on screen.
Commenting on a specific track from the film, titled Ekhane Keu Nei (No One is Here), she remarked that the song evoked a unique sense of melancholy that she had never encountered before in music. For this compositional success, she paid tribute and gave a respectful nod to the prominent Bangladeshi singer and composer, Bappa Mazumder.
The biographical role of the poet Jibanananda Das is portrayed by Khairul Basar, a popular actor recognized for his work in television dramas. The ensemble cast also features several notable artists from the domestic entertainment industry.
