After four years in the international wilderness, Mosaddek Hossain has been recalled to Bangladesh’s One Day International squad for the upcoming series against Australia, reigniting discussion over his role and place in a crowded middle order.
There was a period when it appeared increasingly unlikely that Mosaddek would feature again at the highest level. Former chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain had once suggested that as long as Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained in the side, opportunities for Mosaddek would be limited. Although he later expressed regret over those remarks, the sentiment reflected the intense competition for similar roles within the squad.
The current selection panel, led by Habibul Bashar, has opted to bring Mosaddek back into the fold, naming him in the ODI squad after a sustained period of strong domestic performances. His inclusion raises immediate tactical questions, particularly regarding whether both he and Miraz can comfortably feature in the same starting XI.
Captain Miraz, however, has downplayed any perceived conflict. Speaking ahead of the series, he emphasised their long-standing partnership and complementary responsibilities within the team structure.
Both players made their ODI debuts within a year of each other—Mosaddek in 2016 and Miraz in 2017—and have frequently shared the field, appearing together in 27 ODIs. While their skill sets overlap as right-handed batters and off-spin options, their primary roles differ: Mosaddek is considered a batting all-rounder, whereas Miraz is primarily a bowling all-rounder.
Miraz himself highlighted this distinction, stressing that their contributions are designed to be complementary rather than competitive. He added that Mosaddek’s success would ultimately strengthen the side as a whole.
Mosaddek’s recall has been underpinned by consistent domestic form. Representing Abahani in the Dhaka Premier League this season, he has produced standout all-round numbers, reinforcing his case for selection at international level.
