Indian spinner Manav Suthar has secured a significant milestone in international cricket during his maiden Test match against Afghanistan. The left-arm orthodox spinner surpassed a 47-year-old national record on his debut, delivering a highly impactful performance for the national side.
During the one-off Test match held in New Chandigarh, Suthar dismantled the Afghan batting lineup by claiming six wickets for just 33 runs in the first innings. His performance unfolded systematically; he took three wickets on the second day of the match and secured the remaining three on the subsequent morning. With these exceptional figures, Suthar registered the best bowling performance by an Indian left-arm spinner on Test debut.
The previous record for an Indian left-arm spinner had been held by Dilip Doshi since 1979. During that season, Doshi took 6 for 103 against Australia in Chennai. Although Suthar matched Doshi’s tally of six wickets, his significantly lower run concession eclipsed the long-standing record after nearly five decades.
In the broader context of Indian cricket history, Narendra Hirwani continues to hold the ultimate benchmark for the best bowling performance on Test debut. In 1988, the leg-spinner achieved historic figures against the West Indies, taking 8 for 61 in the first innings and 8 for 75 in the second. His aggregate of 16 wickets remains an unmatched global record for a maiden Test appearance.
The historical standings of leading Indian debutant bowling performances in a single innings are detailed in the table below:
| Bowler | Opposition & Year | Innings Bowling Figures | Historical Significance |
| Narendra Hirwani | West Indies (1988) | 8 wickets for 61 runs | Holds the all-time world record for best debut match figures. |
| Manav Suthar | Afghanistan (2026) | 6 wickets for 33 runs | Broke the 47-year-old record for an Indian left-arm spinner. |
| Abid Ali | Australia (1967) | 6 wickets for 55 runs | Previously held the second-best innings figures for an Indian debutant. |
| Dilip Doshi | Australia (1979) | 6 wickets for 103 runs | Former record-holder among Indian left-arm spinners on debut. |
Suthar’s contributions were not limited to a single innings. Over the course of the match, he accumulated combined figures of seven wickets with the ball and contributed 28 runs with the bat. This comprehensive all-round display earned him the Player of the Match award on his international debut.
By securing this accolade, Suthar became the ninth Indian cricketer—and only the third specialist bowler—to be named Player of the Match on Test debut. He joins an elite bowling group that previously consisted only of off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and left-arm fast bowler Rudra Pratap Singh.
The one-off Test concluded with a resounding victory for the Indian team, defeating Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs. Afghanistan suffered a severe batting collapse across both innings, being bowled out for 152 in their first innings and managing only 112 in their second after India enforced the follow-on.
The foundation of India’s dominance was established in their opening turn at the crease, where the home team accumulated a massive total of 564 for the loss of 8 wickets before declaring. Suthar’s disciplined bowling lines capitalised on this scoreboard pressure, converting his first international appearance into a historic cricketing feat.
