A fatal altercation between two patients occurred within the male ward of Pabna Mental Hospital, the sole specialised psychiatric institution in Bangladesh. The incident resulted in the death of one patient and left another severely injured, raising serious concerns regarding the facility’s security and operational management.
On 2 June, two patients diagnosed with schizophrenia were admitted to the high-risk Ward No. 6 of the hospital. At approximately 3:00 am, a sudden physical altercation erupted between the two individuals inside the ward.
During the fight, one of the patients sustained severe head trauma and died at the scene. The other patient involved was also critically injured during the confrontation.
Although the incident took place during the early hours of 2 June, allegations emerged that the hospital authorities initially attempted to conceal the matter. The incident became widely known on the evening of Monday, 8 June, triggering widespread agitation and anger among hospital staff, the public, and relatives of the patients.
The identities and backgrounds of the individuals directly connected to the incident are outlined in the table below:
| Individual | Age | Background / Residence | Role in Incident |
| Inzamul Haque | 26 | Son of the late Golam Nabi; resident of Rajnagar village, Jhenaidah. | Deceased; died at the scene from severe head injuries. |
| Nazmul Islam | 28 | Son of Abdul Malek; resident of Khojakhali village, Ullapara Upazila, Sirajganj. | Patient involved in the altercation; sustained severe injuries. |
| Ejazul Haque | — | Brother of the deceased, Inzamul Haque. | Complainant; filed a murder case at Pabna Sadar Police Station. |
| Abdul Malek | — | Father of the patient, Nazmul Islam. | Accused hospital staff of physically assaulting his injured son. |
| Rekha Akhter | — | Nursing Superintendent at Pabna Mental Hospital. | Institutional witness; cited severe staffing shortages. |
| Dr Shafqat Wahid | — | Director of Pabna Mental Hospital. | Institutional spokesperson; confirmed the occurrence of the event. |
| Tariqul Islam | — | Officer-in-Charge (OC), Pabna Sadar Police Station. | Lead law enforcement official handling the legal proceedings. |
Following the death, the brother of the deceased, Ejazul Haque, filed a murder case as the complainant at Pabna Sadar Police Station on 3 June. Expressing profound frustration over the hospital’s protocols, he questioned the placement of two high-risk patients together:
“The man who fought with my brother is also a mental patient. How could they keep two such patients together? When they were fighting, why was no one there to stop them?”
Conversely, Nazmul Islam’s father, Abdul Malek, leveled separate allegations against the hospital employees. He claimed that following the altercation, the facility’s staff physically assaulted his son, resulting in broken limbs.
Dr Shafqat Wahid, the Director of Pabna Mental Hospital, officially confirmed the veracity of the incident. He noted that both patients involved had a history of receiving treatment at the facility prior to this admission. He stated that because the altercation transpired in the dead of night, the staff on duty failed to detect it in time.
The hospital’s Nursing Superintendent, Rekha Akhter, highlighted the systemic challenges faced by the nursing staff. She explained that psychiatric patients can occasionally appear perfectly stable before suddenly exhibiting extreme violence.
According to Akhter, managing such unpredictable behavior is nearly impossible for the limited number of nurses on duty. She revealed that the hospital suffers from a critical shortage of male caregivers. Furthermore, the existing personnel do not receive specialised training or risk allowances for handling violent psychiatric patients.
The Officer-in-Charge of Pabna Sadar Police Station, Tariqul Islam, stated that the legal process faces unique complications due to the mental state of the accused.
Following the filing of the case, the police dispatched formal correspondence to both the court and the authorities of the Pabna Mental Hospital. Legal directives and technical guidance are currently being sought from these entities. Police authorities confirmed that further legal actions will be determined strictly in accordance with the instructions received from the court and medical experts.
