The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has formally declared that the Iranian national football team will be permitted to enter United States territory 24 hours prior to each of their scheduled FIFA World Cup matches.
The squad, assigned to Group G, will play all their tournament fixtures on American soil. However, due to administrative and geopolitical factors, the team will maintain their main training camp across the border in Tijuana, Mexico, requiring a series of short-haul transborder trips.
This regulatory update from Washington addresses previous media reports published late last week. Those accounts, which cited the Iranian Ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, asserted that the United States would enforce strict same-day travel rules, forcing the Iranian team to cross the border on match mornings and return to Mexico immediately after the final whistle.
A Homeland Security spokesperson directly countered those claims, stating that the squad would not be bound to a same-day travel restriction. In an official briefing, the spokesperson clarified:
“The claims are inaccurate. Through the courtesy of President Trump, the Iranian team will be granted the opportunity to arrive at their match venues one day before the fixtures.”
Amir Mehdi Alavi, speaking on behalf of the Iran Football Federation, stated via the ISNA news agency that the delegation will travel to the United States on private chartered flights, in full compliance with FIFA protocols. Alavi explained that while the team will arrive 24 hours before their opening game against New Zealand, they intend to travel to their venue cities two days in advance for their next two group fixtures.
In a Monday interview with Reuters via an interpreter in Tijuana, Ambassador Pasandideh criticized the revocation of US visas for several key football federation staff. However, he confirmed that the individuals who do hold valid visas face no overnight stay restrictions within the United States, meaning their entry paperwork lacks any clause demanding an immediate same-day exit.
The visas for the active players were approved by US officials on Friday—just ten days before Iran’s first match—following a period of diplomatic delays. Yet, the Iranian federation noted that several essential backroom staff members have still not received entry clearance. The list of personnel missing visas includes the team manager, two performance analysts, the media director, and a representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Iranian team had initially chosen Tucson, Arizona, as their official World Cup headquarters. However, those operational arrangements were abandoned in February following the outbreak of military hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
In March, US President Donald Trump stated that Washington had no intention of blocking Iran’s participation in the tournament, though he remarked that staying inside the United States might not be advisable for the team’s “own life and safety”. FIFA subsequently approved an emergency request by the Iranian federation to relocate their base camp to the Marriott Hotel and the Centro Xoloitzcuintle sports complex in Tijuana.
The verified group-stage match dates, venues, and planned border-crossing windows for the Iranian team are presented in the table below:
