The FIFA World Cup 2026 officially commences on Thursday, 11 June, as co-hosts Mexico face South Africa in the opening match of the tournament. The highly anticipated Group A fixture will take place at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Prior to kick-off, the iconic stadium will host a spectacular opening ceremony to mark the beginning of football’s most prestigious global event.
For the first time in the tournament’s history, the opening celebrations will be shared across the three host nations—Mexico, Canada, and the United States—with separate events scheduled over three consecutive days.
Mexico (Thursday, 11 June): The primary celebration at the Estadio Azteca features Colombian pop star Shakira alongside Nigerian Afrobeats artist Burna Boy. The duo will perform the tournament’s official theme song, titled “Dai Dai”. The ceremony will also feature performances by Colombian artist J Balvin and the renowned Mexican pop-rock band Maná.
Canada (Friday, 12 June): The second opening ceremony will be staged at BMO Field in Toronto. Scheduled to begin at 11:30 PM Bangladesh Standard Time (BST), the event will feature performances by Michael Bublé, Alanis Morissette, and Alessia Cara.
United States (Saturday, 13 June): The final segment of the opening festivities will take place at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, commencing at 5:30 AM BST. This Hollywood-inspired production will feature an international line-up, including Katy Perry, Lisa of Blackpink, Future, and Anitta.
The opening fixture revives the memory of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where these two nations also contested the tournament’s inaugural match. That encounter, played in Johannesburg, concluded in a 1-1 draw. Exactly 16 years later, the two teams meet again under identical tournament circumstances, though this time Mexico enjoy home-ground advantage at the Estadio Azteca.
Mexico enter the tournament relying heavily on a disciplined defensive structure. The squad is anchored by veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who is making history by participating in his record-breaking sixth FIFA World Cup. Comprising a blend of experienced players and emerging young talent, the Mexican team has kept six clean sheets in their last eight international matches.
Conversely, South Africa arrive with high confidence, built upon their signature rapid counter-attacking style. The African representatives possess a highly consistent attacking record, having scored at least one goal in each of their last nine World Cup matches.
