Two young men sustained severe physical injuries following a targeted assault by suspected narcotics traders in the Kaliakair Upazila of Gazipur district. The incident occurred while the victims were returning home after participating in a community-led anti-drug awareness meeting. Following the violent confrontation, law enforcement authorities apprehended three individuals, including two women, who have subsequently been remanded to prison by judicial order.
The dynamic of the assault unfolded on Friday evening, 12 June 2026, within the Satkura locality under the jurisdiction of Kaliakair Upazila. The wounded individuals have been formally identified as Naim Islam, aged 20, who is the son of Hafiz Uddin, and Saddam Hossain, aged 22, the son of Saiful Islam. Both victims are residents of Jathalia village, a neighbouring area within the same upazila. Following the attack, local citizens quickly rescued the bleeding victims from the scene and arranged for their immediate admission to the Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical treatment.
According to local residents and police briefings, the residents of Satkura had organised a community-based awareness symposium on Friday afternoon. The primary objective of the public assembly was to formulate strategies to eliminate illicit drug trafficking and consumption within the Satkura area. The civic event attracted significant local engagement, with more than one hundred people from Satkura and its adjacent villages participating in the anti-narcotics discussions.
The ambush transpired as the attendees were dispersing and traveling back to their respective residences after the conclusion of the seminar. A group of assailants, equipped with domestic weapons, launched an unprovoked and sudden assault specifically targeting Naim Islam and Saddam Hossain. Formal complaints indicate that the perpetrators repeatedly struck and hacked the two young men with sharp implements, inflicting severe open wounds. The victims collapsed to the ground due to significant blood loss, causing widespread panic and alarm among other pedestrians and residents in the vicinity before bystanders managed to intervene and transport them to the hospital.
In the immediate aftermath of the violent confrontation, local villagers cooperated to detain three individuals suspected of direct involvement in the physical assault. The detained suspects have been identified as Chan Miah, aged 60, his wife Asiya Begum, aged 50, and their daughter-in-law Shilpi Akhter, aged 25. The angry community members handed the three suspects over to the responding police officers who arrived at the crime scene.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliakair Police Station, Sohidul Islam, confirmed that a police contingent was deployed to the Satkura locality immediately upon receiving emergency notifications regarding the public disturbance. The police officers took custody of the three detained individuals and transferred them to the station. Law enforcement records reveal that the accused family has long-standing allegations against them regarding the systematic sale and consumption of prohibited substances within the neighborhood. Following the arrests, police personnel conducted a formal search operation inside the suspects’ residence, resulting in the successful discovery and seizure of illegal narcotics.
The victims of the assault, Naim Islam and Saddam Hossain, stated from their hospital beds that Chan Miah, alongside his wife, son, and daughter-in-law, had ambushed them deliberately because of their participation in the anti-drug rally. They affirmed that the suspects utilised sharp machetes (da) to inflict life-threatening bodily harm. The police administration has processed a formal criminal lawsuit filed by the affected party against the perpetrators.
Officer-in-Charge Sohidul Islam stated that based on the primary information report and the subsequent recovery of contraband from the residence, legal proceedings were strictly executed. On Saturday morning, 13 June 2026, the three apprehended suspects were produced before a local court, which ordered their formal transfer to jail custody. Meanwhile, the violent retaliatory strike against civic participants has sparked intense anger among the broader population of Kaliakair. Local citizens have initiated public appeals demanding that the district administration implement stringent punitive measures against local drug cartels and sustain proactive operations to guarantee a narcotics-free environment in Satkura.
