Five-time world champions Brazil suffered an early setback in their World Cup campaign after being held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Competing without Neymar, the Brazilian side appeared disorganised during the opening exchanges, whilst Morocco established a structured and cohesive rhythm. The African nation came close to opening the scoring in the sixth minute. Moving the ball from the left flank through a sequence of short passes, they penetrated the opposition penalty area. The young Moroccan midfielder, Neil El Aynaoui (Benjamin El Ainoui), controlled the ball and struck a shot towards goal, but his effort was blocked by a decisive intervention from Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhães.
Brazil gradually absorbed the early pressure and began to assert themselves. During a counter-attack, the South American side created a significant opportunity when Igor Thiago reached a lofted pass from a teammate. Despite leaping at the correct moment, the striker failed to make proper contact with the ball.
As Brazil were establishing their rhythm, Morocco claimed the lead in the 21st minute. Real Madrid star Brahim Díaz delivered a precise pass to forward Ismael Saibari, who converted the chance to put the African side ahead.
Brazil responded 11 minutes later through an individual effort by Vinícius Júnior. In the 32nd minute, the forward dribbled past a Moroccan defender from the left flank, entered the penalty box, and delivered a powerful shot into the net. Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou dived but was unable to stop the strike. The goal marked Vinícius Júnior’s 50th international goal in the yellow jersey.
The first half concluded at 1-1, and the second period saw both teams maintaining their defensive structures whilst launching sporadic attacks. Morocco appeared less dominant than they had been in the first half, allowing Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil to control the majority of the play.
However, Morocco threatened late in the match. In the 99th minute of stoppage time, El Aynaoui unleashed a long-range shot that required a crucial save from Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker. The draw leaves both Group C competitors sharing the points after their opening fixture.
