The literary community celebrates the birthday of Selina Hossain, a distinguished luminary of Bengali fiction and a recipient of the prestigious Ekushey Padak. Selina Hossain was born on 14 June 1947 in the city of Rajshahi. Her ancestral home is situated in Hajirpara village within the Lakshmipur district. She was the fourth of seven children born to her parents, A.K. Mosharraf Hossain and Moriamunnesa Bokul.
Hossain began her primary education at Latifpur Primary School in Bogra. She completed her matriculation from Lokenath Girls’ School in Rajshahi in 1962. Following her intermediate studies at Rajshahi Mohila College, she enrolled in the Department of Bengali Language and Literature at the University of Rajshahi. Her university years marked the beginning of her deep engagement with cultural activities, literary pursuits, and political awareness. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in 1967 and completed her Master of Arts degree in 1968.

For more than two decades, she served as the editor of the popular children’s magazine Dhan Shaliker Desh. In 1997, she achieved a significant institutional milestone by becoming the first female Director of the Bangla Academy. She subsequently elevated her leadership role within the institution by serving as the President of the Bangla Academy.
Hossain began her literary career as a short story writer, publishing her debut collection, Utsho Theke Nironshor, in 1969. Over the subsequent decades, she authored nearly two dozen novels alongside numerous short story collections and essays, earning both critical acclaim and widespread popularity.
Among her creations, the novel Hangor Nodi Grenade stands as a monumental contribution to Bengali literature. The book was adapted into a landmark film of the same name by the noted filmmaker Chashi Nazrul Islam. It is documented that the legendary auteur Satyajit Ray had also expressed an interest in adapting the novel into a film, though the project ultimately did not materialise. Additionally, several of her literary works have been adapted into television dramas for Bangladesh Television (BTV).
In recognition of her outstanding contributions to literature, Hossain has been honoured with numerous national and international accolades, most notably the Bangla Academy Literary Award and the Ekushey Padak.
In her personal life, Hossain experienced a profound tragedy. Her daughter, Faria Lara, was the first female pilot instructor in Bangladesh. On 27 September 1998, Lara died tragically in a plane crash in the Postogola area of Dhaka, an event that remains a source of enduring grief for the author.
Hossain continues to be an active and respected figure in the realms of literature, culture, and national identity, using her writing to highlight history, humanity, and liberation.
