The police have arrested two men in Dhamoirhat Upazila of Naogaon district following formal allegations that they physically assaulted their 65-year-old mother, Chand Sultana, after she refused to transfer ownership of her land property to them. The arrests were executed on Sunday afternoon, after which both individuals were produced before a local court and subsequently remanded to prison.
The victim, Chand Sultana, is a resident of Khorampur village, which is situated within the administrative boundaries of Dhamoirhat Upazila. The apprehended individuals have been identified as her eldest son, Abdul Momin, aged 45, and her youngest son, Abdul Mukim, aged 35. Both suspects are siblings and reside within the same locality.
According to official sources from the local police station, the elderly victim arrived at the law enforcement facility on Saturday afternoon, accompanied by her daughter. She formally submitted a written complaint detailing the continuous domestic abuse and harassment she suffered at the hands of her two sons.
The written complaint reveals that the family dynamics changed considerably following the death of Chand Sultana’s husband. After his demise, both Abdul Momin and Abdul Mukim got married and subsequently established separate households to manage their individual families independently. However, shortly after starting their separate domestic arrangements, the two brothers began exerting intense psychological and physical pressure on their mother, demanding that she legally transfer the ownership rights of the landed properties registered under her name to them.
Although several attempts were made within the family circle and through local mediation to resolve the property dispute amicably, the two sons repeatedly rejected these initiatives. Instead, they regularly subjected their elderly mother to severe verbal abuse, using offensive language, and frequently resorted to physical battery over an extended period.
The situation escalated critically on Saturday when the two brothers allegedly launched another physical assault on their mother. During this specific altercation, they attempted to forcibly evict her from the family residence. Finding no other viable alternative to ensure her personal safety and protect her legal rights, Chand Sultana approached the local police station later that afternoon to seek formal state intervention and file the written statement against her offspring.
Following the receipt of the official complaint, a law enforcement team moved quickly to investigate the matter. On Sunday afternoon, police officers successfully apprehended both accused brothers directly from their locality.
Commenting on the law enforcement response, the Superintendent of Police for Naogaon, Mohammad Tarikul Islam, stated that upon receiving the formal complaint, an operational team was quickly dispatched to the village under the direct supervision and leadership of the Officer-in-Charge of Dhamoirhat Police Station, Mintu Rahman.
“A police team led by Dhamoirhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mintu Rahman was sent to the spot immediately after the complaint was received,” confirmed Superintendent Mohammad Tarikul Islam. “The police officers spoke extensively with the local residents and neighbours at the scene of the incident, and the primary testimonies gathered from the villagers verified the truth of the allegations. Following this verification, the police arrested the two accused sons.”
After the initial interrogation and completion of all mandatory legal procedures at the police station, the two brothers were escorted to the local court on Sunday afternoon. The judicial authorities reviewed the initial police findings and subsequently ordered both Abdul Momin and Abdul Mukim to be sent directly to judicial custody in prison pending further formal legal
