Bangladesh international batsman Towhid Hridoy has allocated the vehicle he won during the bilateral One Day International (ODI) series against Australia to his mother, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Hridoy was adjudged the ‘Most Valuable Cricketer’ of the series for his performances against the visiting Australian side and was subsequently awarded a red saloon car produced by the automotive manufacturer Chery.
Following the post-match presentation ceremony, the cricketer shared an image of himself alongside the new vehicle on his social media profile. The post revealed that he had explicitly intended to buy an automobile for his mother shortly before receiving the prize.
“Mother, I had intended to buy a car for you, and within a few days, I received one! Isn’t it strange?” Hridoy published online.
Hridoy’s professional trajectory was heavily dependent on the financial decisions made by his mother during his early years. As a youth, he aimed to move to Dhaka to train at a specialist cricket facility. Due to severe economic hardships, his family lacked the funds necessary to pay for his enrolment and upkeep in the capital.
To provide the required capital, Hridoy’s mother secretly mortgaged her last remaining parcel of land, an arrangement undertaken without the knowledge or consent of the player’s father. After arriving in Dhaka with the funds, Hridoy was deceived by a fraudulent sporting academy operating in the Bonosree sector. This financial setback caused him to contemplate quitting the sport altogether, but he ultimately resumed playing to honour the financial risks taken by his mother.
Throughout his international career, Hridoy has consistently prioritised his mother’s health requirements over his professional commitments. This was demonstrated when he chose not to report to an official national team practice camp, electing instead to stay at a medical facility to care for his mother. His absence from the squad generated substantial unverified commentary across various domestic media outlets.
The relationship between the player and his mother was previously highlighted by an open letter authored by Hridoy, which detailed the exact moment he became aware of her oncological condition and the subsequent impact it had on his career.
“My mother, I first received the news of your cancer on my birthday,” Hridoy recorded in the correspondence. “That day, I realised for the first time that I need you, even in exchange for the entire world. After that, the entire journey of your suffering was before my eyes. I have lost count of how many tears I shed looking at your sleeping face.
I wiped those tears myself so that you would not wake up and see my wet eyes. You fought against cancer, and I constantly fought against the fear of losing you. But I gained all of this strength by watching you, mother. By watching you, I learned how much a woman has to sacrifice, how hard a mother has to work, and how honest a woman must be. You are my finest educational institution.”
Following the final ODI fixture against Australia, several individual accolades were presented to the top performers of the Bangladesh national cricket squad.
