Brazil forward Neymar has been officially ruled out of the remainder of the FIFA World Cup group stage due to a persistent calf injury, complicating selection plans for head coach Carlo Ancelotti. The 34-year-old was absent from Brazil’s opening Group C fixture, which resulted in a 1-1 draw against Morocco. Reports indicate that Ancelotti will be unable to call upon the attacker for the next two matches, raising significant doubts among commentators regarding his capacity to feature further in the tournament.
The veteran forward sustained the muscular injury on 17 May while playing for his domestic club, Santos. Although he reported to the Brazilian national team camp ten days later, he has been unable to participate in any collective training sessions with the squad.
According to reports published by ESPN, Neymar will play no part in Brazil’s forthcoming group fixtures against Haiti on 20 June and Scotland on 25 June. Sources indicate that the player underwent a follow-up medical examination in the United States to re-assess the condition of his leg, following up on an initial scan conducted last week. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has not yet publicly disclosed the official results of this latest medical assessment.
Further reports from the Associated Press (AP) revealed that Neymar was initially scheduled to return to the training pitch on Monday. Instead of resuming physical exercise with his teammates, the forward was redirected to a hospital to undergo additional diagnostic tests, increasing the uncertainty surrounding his recovery timeline.
Despite the physical setback, components of the Brazilian media report that the national team’s medical department remains optimistic about restoring the forward to full fitness prior to the commencement of the knockout rounds. This operational plan confirms that Neymar will watch the matches against Haiti and Scotland from the sidelines.
Prior to the opening stalemate against Morocco, head coach Carlo Ancelotti defended the inclusion of the country’s all-time leading goalscorer in the tournament squad, emphasizing his work ethic and value to the camp.
“Neymar is working very hard to recover as quickly as possible,” Ancelotti stated. “Our expectation is that he will recover and rejoin the group next week.”
