Dhaka, February 24, 2025 – The government has decided to forward a list of former deputy commissioners (DCs) accused of “serious financial irregularities” to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for further investigation, stated Public Administration Ministry Senior Secretary Mokhles Ur Rahman yesterday.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, Mokhles acknowledged circulating allegations that some former DCs had embezzled amounts ranging from Tk 4 crore to Tk 30 crore. “If these claims are verified through investigations by relevant agencies and our own internal mechanisms, only then will we refer specific cases to the ACC. We will not be sending general allegations,” he clarified.
The Senior Secretary also revealed that intelligence agencies have already been assigned to scrutinize the activities of DCs responsible for overseeing the 2024 elections. “Once we receive their reports, we will determine the appropriate course of action,” he added.
The interim government has already initiated disciplinary actions against DCs who served as returning officers in three controversial national elections held under the Awami League’s tenure. As a result, 67 officials have either been forced into early retirement or placed on special duty as OSDs (Officers on Special Duty).
Mokhles assured that those who have been designated as OSDs but were not involved in any wrongdoing will still have the opportunity to continue their professional duties without unnecessary hardship. “The government is committed to fairness. No innocent officer will face unjust punishment,” he emphasized.
He further mentioned that a high-powered committee, led by the Finance Adviser, is carefully analyzing these cases to ensure due process. “No decisions will be made based on emotions. Every action will be taken following established legal procedures and regulations,” he assured.
The upcoming actions by the ACC could set a significant precedent for administrative accountability and transparency in Bangladesh.
