MOSCOW, 1 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Russia on Saturday dismissed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the United States as a total “failure” following a tense and highly publicised confrontation with US President Donald Trump.
“The visit of the head of the neo-Nazi regime, V. Zelensky, to Washington on 28 February is a complete political and diplomatic failure of the Kyiv regime,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated in an official statement.
Zelensky’s trip was intended to strengthen ties with Washington and secure continued military and financial support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. However, the visit took a dramatic turn when Trump openly rebuked Zelensky, accusing him of lacking gratitude for US aid and questioning Ukraine’s willingness to pursue peace.
The heated exchange, broadcast live, saw Trump claim that Ukraine held “no winning cards” in the war and warned Zelensky against “gambling with World War Three.” The confrontation sent shockwaves through European capitals, where leaders have been closely monitoring Washington’s stance on the war.
Additional Context
Zelensky’s visit came at a time when Western military aid to Ukraine is facing increasing uncertainty, particularly as political shifts in the US and Europe affect commitments to long-term support. The Biden administration had previously championed extensive aid packages, but Trump’s presidency has signalled a potential reassessment of US involvement.
Russia has seized on this development, using Zelensky’s visit as evidence of Kyiv’s waning influence and declining Western backing. Moscow has long labelled Ukraine’s government as a “neo-Nazi regime,” a claim widely rejected by Kyiv and its allies.
Meanwhile, European leaders are now grappling with the implications of a possible reduction in US support. As the war enters its third year, Ukraine continues to push for stronger security guarantees, while Russia seeks to capitalise on divisions among its adversaries.
