LONDON, 2 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has issued a stark warning that Europe must “urgently rearm” as leaders from across the continent gathered in London for emergency discussions concerning Ukraine.
Speaking ahead of an EU summit scheduled for Thursday, von der Leyen announced her intention to present a “comprehensive plan” to boost European defence capabilities. Stressing the gravity of the situation, she declared, “We must have a surge in defence and step up massively.”
She further emphasised the necessity for increased defence expenditure, stating, “It is now of utmost importance that we raise spending… we must be prepared for the worst.”
The meeting of European leaders was described as a “good and frank discussion,” during which they deliberated on the necessity of providing security guarantees.
Addressing US President Donald Trump, von der Leyen reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to defending democracy and upholding international law. “We stand ready, together with you, to defend democracy, to uphold the principle of the rule of law, and to ensure that no nation can invade, bully, or alter borders through force,” she asserted.
She concluded by underlining the shared global responsibility to prevent future conflicts, stating, “It is in our common interest to ensure that future wars are prevented.”
The remarks from von der Leyen come amid escalating concerns over the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has significantly strained European security and prompted discussions about NATO’s role in regional defence. European nations have been under increasing pressure to enhance their military capabilities and reduce dependency on the United States for security assurances.
Additionally, concerns over political shifts in the United States, particularly regarding future NATO commitments, have prompted European leaders to take a more proactive stance in bolstering their own defence mechanisms. The upcoming EU summit is expected to focus on coordinated military investments, arms production, and strategic partnerships to enhance the continent’s security posture.
