Voters Set to Elect New Congress in Pacific’s Micronesia

SYDNEY, 4 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Voting commenced on Tuesday in the Federated States of Micronesia, a remote Pacific nation that remains a steadfast ally of the United States, even as neighbouring countries strengthen ties with China.

Micronesia, an archipelago of volcanic islands and coral atolls, has long been one of Washington’s closest partners in the Pacific.

With a population of approximately 100,000, the nation is electing 10 members of congress who will serve two-year terms, according to the country’s electoral office.

Additionally, four other members serve four-year terms, and from among them, the president is selected. As a result, no presidential election will take place until 2027.

Last year, incumbent President Wesley Simina signed a 20-year economic and security agreement with the United States, which will see Washington provide $3.3 billion in financial assistance over the coming two decades.

At the time of signing, Simina hailed the agreement as “an important milestone” that “opens a new chapter in our enduring partnership with the United States.”

Micronesia occupies a strategically significant position in the Pacific, lying southeast of Guam at a critical maritime crossroads.

As part of its military expansion in the region, the United States Air Force launched a $400 million project last year to upgrade the runway on Yap, Micronesia’s largest island, enabling it to accommodate larger military aircraft.

Regional Geopolitical Shifts

While Micronesia has reinforced its ties with Washington, other Pacific nations have shifted their allegiances in recent years.

Solomon Islands, Kiribati, and Nauru have severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan in favour of closer engagement with Beijing.

In 2022, the Solomon Islands signed a secretive security pact with China, sparking concerns that Beijing may seek to establish a greater military presence in the region.

As Pacific nations navigate evolving geopolitical dynamics, Micronesia’s commitment to its longstanding alliance with the United States underscores its strategic importance in maintaining regional stability.
