The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested six suspects in connection with the violent gold heist and shooting of a jewelry trader in the capital’s Banasree area on February 23.
Police recovered 4.9 tola of gold, Tk 2.44 lakh in cash from sold gold, a revolver with ammunition, and a motorcycle used in the crime, DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali revealed at a media briefing today.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Md Kawsar (31), Md Farhad (64), Md Khalilur Rahman (50), Md Suman (30), Dulal Chowdhury (43), and Aminul (35). Based on intelligence, detectives conducted a series of operations across Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Barishal, Pirojpur, and Madaripur, leading to their capture.
The victim, Md Anwar Hossain (45), owner of Alankar Jewellers in Dhaka’s Rampura, was ambushed while returning home with 160 tolas of gold (worth approximately Tk 2.47 crore) and Tk 1 lakh in cash.
According to police, the attack took place around 10:45 PM in Banasree’s D Block when six to seven armed robbers on three motorcycles intercepted him at his home’s gate. As they tried to snatch his valuables, Anwar resisted, prompting the attackers to shoot him multiple times, hitting his left knee and thigh. They also slashed him with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured before escaping with the gold and money.
Anwar was first taken to a hospital in Rampura before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced treatment. His wife filed a case with Rampura Police Station on February 24.
At today’s press briefing, DMP Commissioner Sazzat Ali described the robbery as a meticulously planned attack, revealing that the gang held a preparatory meeting before executing the crime.
“Our DB teams worked relentlessly, analyzing past robbery patterns, reviewing CCTV footage, and using technology to track the suspects,” Ali said. “The breakthrough came when one suspect was arrested in Barishal, whose confession led to further arrests.”
Authorities confirmed that all six arrestees have multiple robbery cases against them and a long history of similar crimes.
“Legal actions are underway, and our crackdown on such criminal networks will continue,” the DMP commissioner added.
