The Bangladesh government is set to fast-track the trial process for rape cases, with investigations to be completed within 15 days and trials concluded within 90 days, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul announced today.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, Nazrul said that the government will introduce legal amendments to expedite rape trials and ensure swift justice for victims.

Condemning the rape of an eight-year-old child in Magura, Nazrul reaffirmed the government’s strict stance against sexual violence.

“All those accused in the Magura incident have already been arrested. The government is working to ensure the maximum punishment for them through the legal process,” he said.

The law adviser outlined a series of measures to combat violence against women and children, including:

  • Completion of rape case investigations within 15 days (down from 30 days).
  • Trials to be concluded within 90 days (previously 180 days).
  • No bail for accused individuals if trials are delayed beyond 90 days.
  • Strict monitoring by the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Home Affairs to prevent delays.
  • Strengthening social movements and awareness campaigns to tackle gender-based violence.

“Our stance against violence against women and children, including rape, is very clear. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to take a strict stand and submit reports to the court listing all instances of violence against women,” he said.

Nazrul also emphasized that women must be able to live and work without fear, and those who threaten their safety will face strict legal action.

Regarding the upcoming legal amendments, Nazrul noted that under the current system, if an investigating officer fails to complete an investigation within 30 days, they are replaced. However, this practice will be changed, and officers will now be required to complete investigations within the designated 15-day period.

The government is expected to finalize these legal reforms soon, ensuring that rape trials in Bangladesh are faster, stricter, and more efficient in delivering justice.
