Kyiv, Ukraine, 30 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Ukraine has accused Russia of committing a “war crime” following a large-scale attack on the city of Kharkiv, which included a strike on a military hospital, injuring medical personnel and soldiers receiving treatment.
According to a statement from the Ukrainian army, a Shahed drone strike damaged the hospital building as well as nearby residential areas. “Preliminary reports indicate casualties among military personnel undergoing treatment at the facility,” the statement read. However, Kyiv, as per its standard protocol, did not disclose the exact number of wounded soldiers.
Ukrainian authorities have condemned the attack, asserting that Russia has violated international humanitarian law. The deliberate targeting of medical facilities constitutes a breach of the Geneva Conventions, which protect hospitals and healthcare workers during conflicts.
The Ukrainian Emergency Services confirmed that the “massive attack” on Kharkiv also resulted in widespread destruction of residential and office buildings. Governor Oleg Synegubov reported that two civilians were killed—a 67-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman—while at least 25 others, including children, sustained injuries.
Casualties & Damage in Kharkiv Attack
---
Civilians Killed: 2 (Man, 67; Woman, 70)
Injured: 25 (Including Children)
Targeted Locations: Military Hospital, Residential & Office Buildings
Weapon Used: Shahed Drone
This latest assault comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war, now in its fourth year. US President Donald Trump’s administration has been pushing for a swift resolution, engaging in negotiations with both Moscow and Kyiv. However, despite a proposed unconditional and full ceasefire, Russia has rejected the deal, while Ukraine has accused the Kremlin of deliberately prolonging discussions to continue its offensive.
Recently, a partial ceasefire aimed at halting strikes in the Black Sea region was said to have taken effect, according to Ukrainian officials. However, Russia has insisted that the agreement will only be fully implemented if restrictions on its agricultural sector are lifted.
The attack on Kharkiv has drawn condemnation from international human rights organisations, with growing calls for increased sanctions on Russia. The targeting of medical infrastructure has raised serious concerns over the humanitarian impact of the war, particularly on vulnerable civilians and displaced populations.
As the conflict intensifies, Kyiv continues to appeal for further military and humanitarian aid from its Western allies, reinforcing the urgency for a long-term diplomatic solution to prevent further loss of life.
