Tragic Restaurant Blaze Claims 22 Lives in Northeast China

Beijing, 29 April 2025 – A devastating fire at a restaurant in Liaoyang City, located in China’s northeastern Liaoning Province, has claimed the lives of at least 22 individuals and left three others injured, according to Chinese state media.

The blaze erupted shortly after midday at around 12:25 p.m. local time (0425 GMT) and swiftly engulfed the establishment, which is situated approximately 580 kilometres northeast of the capital, Beijing.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that the fire was brought under control by emergency services, but not before it had taken a heavy toll. As of 2:00 p.m., the tragic incident had resulted in 22 confirmed fatalities.

President Xi Jinping issued a strong statement following the incident, describing the fire as having caused “significant casualties” and stressing that the lessons to be drawn from the tragedy are “profoundly serious.” He called for immediate and thorough medical attention for the injured, respectful handling of the deceased, and full support for the grieving families. Furthermore, he demanded a swift investigation into the cause of the fire and insisted on holding those responsible accountable in accordance with the law.

Disturbing video footage circulating on social media platforms, including Douyin (China’s version of TikTok), showed thick plumes of black smoke rising above a two-storey building as fierce flames consumed the structure. Verified clips also depicted emergency personnel transporting victims on stretchers and firefighters battling the inferno with high-pressure water hoses.

While the specific cause of the fire remains under investigation, the incident casts a grim spotlight on China’s ongoing struggle with fire safety. Fatal fires remain distressingly common in the country, often attributed to outdated infrastructure, poor compliance with building regulations, and lax enforcement of safety protocols.

Earlier this month, 20 people perished in a fire at a nursing home in Hebei Province. In January, another blaze at a vegetable market in Zhangjiakou, northwest of Beijing, killed eight and injured 15. Just a month prior, a fire at a construction site in Rongcheng City, eastern China, led to the deaths of nine workers.

The Liaoyang restaurant tragedy has once again underscored the urgent need for stricter fire safety measures and improved emergency preparedness across the country.
