Olympic champion Mollie O’Callaghan smoothly progressed to the semi-finals of the 200m freestyle at the World Swimming Championships on Tuesday, as she continues her quest to overcome the emotional comedown following her Olympic triumph in Paris.
Women’s 200m Freestyle – Heats Results
| Swimmer | Country | Time | Position |

| Erin Gemmell | USA | 1:56.74 | 2nd |
| Mollie O’Callaghan | Australia | 1:57.04 | 3rd |
O’Callaghan, 21, a five-time Olympic gold medallist and former world record holder, is the strong favourite in the event despite battling pressure and mental fatigue. In the heats, she clocked 1:57.04, securing the third-fastest time of the morning.
Emotional Toll of Olympic Success
Following the Australian trials in Adelaide last month, O’Callaghan candidly admitted the challenges of defending her Olympic legacy:
“I don’t think there’s been anything as hard as this, coming here and trying to race and trying to, you know, defend my Olympic status in a way,”
— Mollie O’Callaghan, June (Adelaide Trials)
She chose not to speak to reporters after her heat on Tuesday but had earlier helped Australia secure gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay, bringing her career world title tally to nine.
She is also a strong contender in the 100m freestyle.
Background Pressure and Rivalries
O’Callaghan arrived at the 2024 Paris Olympics under immense pressure, having recently lost her 200m freestyle world record to teammate Ariarne Titmus. Despite this, she edged out Titmus for Olympic gold and played a pivotal role in both the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relay victories for Australia.
Notably, Titmus is taking a season-long break and is not competing in Singapore.
