A tragic helicopter crash during a routine training flight in eastern Germany has resulted in the deaths of at least two German Air Force personnel, the Defence Ministry confirmed on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the German Air Force told AFP that the two deceased crew members were “experienced professionals”, while the search continues for a third crew member believed to have been aboard.
Search and Recovery Efforts
After the helicopter was reported missing in the morning, local canoeists were the first to spot wreckage floating in the Mulde River, prompting a full-scale emergency response.
Over 100 emergency service personnel, including police divers, were deployed to the crash site for search and recovery operations.
Due to kerosene leakage from the downed aircraft, a containment boom was installed in the river to mitigate environmental damage.
Official Response
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius expressed profound sorrow over the loss, stating:
“The deaths of the crew members have affected me and the entire armed forces deeply. Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones.”
He confirmed that both victims belonged to Helicopter Wing 64, one of the German Air Force’s primary rotary-wing units, and that the aircraft had been contracted specifically for training purposes.
Pistorius also assured the public that:
“Everything possible will be done to investigate the circumstances of this tragic incident.”
Investigation Underway
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the crash, and a formal investigation is currently in progress. Aviation experts and military investigators are expected to analyse flight data, maintenance logs, and weather conditions at the time of the accident.
The EC-135, a commonly used helicopter for training and utility missions, has a strong safety record, which adds gravity to the unexplained nature of the accident.
This crash marks a sobering reminder of the inherent risks involved in military aviation, even during routine exercises, and underscores the need for rigorous safety protocols and comprehensive investigations.
