President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, held a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday before his planned inspection of humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza, as international condemnation grows over a deepening food crisis in the region.

Witkoff, who has been actively engaged in months of halted ceasefire and hostage negotiations, arrived in Israel and will visit Gaza on Friday, according to a White House announcement.

Humanitarian Assessment Mission

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that:

“Mr Witkoff, having previously visited Gaza in January, will now inspect distribution sites, coordinate a plan to deliver increased food supplies, and meet with local Gazans to understand the humanitarian catastrophe first-hand.”

German Call for Urgent Action

In parallel, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with Netanyahu in Jerusalem. After the meeting, Wadephul issued a stark warning:

“The humanitarian disaster in Gaza is beyond imagination. The Israeli government must act swiftly, securely, and effectively to deliver aid and prevent mass starvation.”

Wadephul expressed optimism following the meeting, adding:

“I have the impression that this has been understood today.

Deadly Aid Chaos: 58 Killed

In a tragic illustration of the challenges facing aid delivery, Gaza’s civil defence agency reported that at least 58 Palestinians were killed late on Wednesday when Israeli forces opened fire on a crowd attempting to stop and access a humanitarian aid convoy.

Eyewitness account:
Jameel Ashour, mourning a relative in Al-Shifa Hospital, told AFP:

“When people saw thieves looting food from the trucks, the desperate crowd rushed in, and Israeli troops opened fire.”

An AFP correspondent confirmed seeing bullet-ridden bodies piled in the hospital’s morgue

Hostage Video Release: Rom Braslavski

The armed wing of Islamic Jihad released a six-minute video showing hostage Rom Braslavski, a German-Israeli security guard abducted from the Nova music festival during the 7 October Hamas-led attack.

In the video, Braslavski, speaking in Hebrew, watches current news reports and pleads for the Israeli government to secure his release.

His family, through the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, responded:

“They managed to break Rom. Even the strongest person has a breaking point. He is a symbol of all the hostages — they must be brought home now.”

Worsening Humanitarian Conditions

The situation on the ground continues to deteriorate. UN-backed experts recently confirmed that famine is now unfolding in Gaza. Shocking images of malnourished and dying children have intensified global outrage.

A displaced Gazan woman, Najah Aish Umm Fadi, mourned:

“We put up with being hungry, but now the death of children who had just been born? Enough!”

Another resident, Amir Zaqot, after securing aid from a parachute drop, stated:

“This is what death looks like. People are fighting each other with knives.
If the crossings were opened, food could reach us. But this is nonsense.”

Diplomatic Fallout and International Reactions

International pressure continues to mount:

  • Canada and Portugal have announced their intention to recognise a Palestinian state, escalating diplomatic strain.
  • Trump, a staunch ally of Israel, criticised Canada’s stance and blamed Hamas for the crisis.
    On Truth Social, he posted:

“The fastest way to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is for Hamas to SURRENDER AND RELEASE THE HOSTAGES!!!”

Earlier this week, however, the US President (in contradiction to Netanyahu’s claims) warned that “real starvation” is occurring in Gaza.

Furthermore, the US State Department has stated it will deny visas to officials from the Palestinian Authority, which governs portions of the Israeli-occupied West Bank — widely considered the heartland of any future Palestinian state.
