The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially recognised Madinah, one of the most sacred cities in the Muslim world, as a ‘Healthy City.’ This prestigious status was granted after the city successfully met 80 rigorous criteria.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, on Thursday, 31st July, Prince Salman bin Sultan, Governor of the Madinah Region, received the WHO certificate of recognition from Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Health, Fahad Al-Jalajel, during a formal ceremony.

Previously, the city of Jeddah had earned this recognition. With Madinah now joining the list, it has secured its position as the second largest ‘Healthy City’ in the Middle East.
WHO Criteria for ‘Healthy City’ Certification
To attain the ‘Healthy City’ status from WHO, a city must satisfy at least 80 criteria. These standards include:
