The Portuguese government has issued a nationwide alert beginning Sunday and lasting through Thursday, warning of an impending heatwave that poses a high wildfire risk across much of the country. Authorities are implementing stringent preventive measures to combat the anticipated threat.

Alert Measures and Restrictions

Duration of Alert Sunday to Thursday (5-day period)
Main Concern Heatwave and heightened wildfire risk
Key Restrictions – Ban on bonfires and fireworks
– Ban on electrical tools in forests
Additional Measures – Restricted access to woodland areas
– Increased ground and aerial patrols
– Boost in forest ranger staffing

Government Response and Statement

Maria Lucia Amaral, Portugal’s Minister for Home Affairs, acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating:

“The next week will be difficult.”

This heightened alert comes as both Portugal and neighbouring Spain continue to face wildfires in several regions — a recurring seasonal crisis across southern Europe.

Climate and Fire Risk Context

Experts have warned that climate change is contributing to the increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, including:

  • Prolonged droughts
  • More aggressive fire outbreaks
  • Accelerated ecosystem degradation

Portugal is especially vulnerable due to its extensive forested landscapes and dry summer conditions.

Damage So Far in 2025

Organisation Reporting Portugal’s Institute of Forests (ICNF)
Forest Area Burned Over 29,000 hectares (approx. 71,600 acres)
Timeframe Since the beginning of 2025

Post-2017 Wildfire Reforms

Following the devastating fire season of 2017, Portugal took significant steps to bolster its wildfire response capabilities, including:

  • Increased funding for firefighting infrastructure
  • Enhanced forest management policies
  • Expanded community awareness and early warning systems

Despite these efforts, the scale of fires this year underscores the ongoing challenges in dealing with extreme climate conditions.

Portugal now braces for a potentially volatile and dangerous week, urging residents to remain vigilant, comply with restrictions, and report any signs of fire promptly to the authorities.
