Hundreds of retired Israeli security officials, including former directors of Israel’s premier intelligence agencies, have made a direct appeal to former US President Donald Trump, urging him to pressure the Israeli government into ending the protracted war in Gaza.

In a bold and unprecedented open letter shared with the media on Monday, the signatories – many of whom once shaped Israel’s national security strategy – contend that the conflict has outlived its legitimacy and is now endangering the nation’s security and global standing.

“It is our professional judgement that Hamas no longer poses a strategic threat to Israel,” the letter states unequivocally.

War No Longer Justified, Say Ex-Security Heads

Ami Ayalon, former Director of the Shin Bet domestic security agency, explained in an accompanying video:

“At first this war was a just war, a defensive war, but when we achieved all military objectives, this war ceased to be a just war.”

As the war approaches its 23rd month, Ayalon warned that it is driving Israel toward a dangerous loss of both security and identity.

Summary of Key Signatories

Position Name
Former Mossad Directors Tamir Pardo, Efraim Halevy, Danny Yatom
Former Shin Bet Directors Ami Ayalon, Nadav Argaman, Yoram Cohen, Yaakov Peri, Carmi Gilon
Former Military Chiefs of Staff Ehud Barak, Moshe Yaalon, Dan Halutz
Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak
Former Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon

The letter was signed by 550 individuals, many of them former high-ranking officers in the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), Shin Bet, and Mossad.

Plea to Trump: Pressure Netanyahu Toward Ceasefire

The letter explicitly calls upon Donald Trump to leverage his influence and credibility among Israelis to steer Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu toward agreeing to a ceasefire.

“The Israeli military has long accomplished the two objectives that could be achieved by force: dismantling Hamas’s military formations and governance,” the signatories wrote.

They emphasise that the third and most critical goal – the return of hostages held in Gaza – “can only be achieved through a deal.”

“Chasing remaining senior Hamas operatives can be done later,” the letter added.

Background and Current Stalemate

The war began following Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attack, which resulted in significant Israeli casualties. Israel responded with a full-scale military operation in Gaza, citing the necessity of eliminating Hamas’s ability to pose further threats.

While international pressure has been mounting for Israel to agree to a ceasefire – which could facilitate the return of hostages and allow UN agencies to deliver humanitarian aid – Netanyahu’s coalition government remains deeply divided. Some ministers continue to advocate for full or partial occupation of Gaza.

Strategic Proposal for Post-War Gaza

The former officials argue that Trump, should he intervene successfully, could also lead efforts to form a regional coalition to support a reformed Palestinian Authority in governing Gaza, thus avoiding a return of Hamas rule.

Political Implications

The plea reflects growing divisions within Israeli society and its defence establishment over the direction and duration of the war.

“We’re not walking out on our responsibilities; we’re walking out on a rigged system,” said one prominent signatory, echoing broader frustrations over the government’s handling of the conflict.

While the Biden administration has been vocal about restraint in Gaza, the letter to Trump is a tactical move, betting on his standing among Israeli conservatives and the possibility of future political leverage.
