The autopsy of journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar has been completed. It was carried out today, Saturday, at around 11:30 AM in the presence of police and family members at the morgue of Munshiganj General Hospital.
The medical officer conducting the post-mortem reported that no signs of injury were found on his body. The autopsy was initiated at 11:00 AM by Sheikh Md Ehsan, the Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of Munshiganj General Hospital, and concluded at approximately 11:30 AM.
Following the procedure, Dr Sheikh Md Ehsanul Islam stated, “The body was recovered from water and showed early signs of decomposition. As far as we could examine, no external or internal injuries were found. However, we have collected samples of the teeth, hair, liver, kidney, and stomach contents. These have been preserved and are being sent to Dhaka for further analysis. A conclusive statement will be made once the full report is received.”
Bibhuranjan Sarkar, aged 71, was serving as Senior Assistant Editor at Ajker Patrika, a daily newspaper. He had been missing since Thursday morning around 10:00 AM after leaving his residence in Siddheshwari, Dhaka. His family filed a general diary (GD) with Ramna Police Station that night, reporting his disappearance.
On Saturday afternoon, at around 3:45 PM, a body was seen floating in the Meghna River near Balakir Char in the Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj. Local residents called the emergency services via 999 to inform the police. Mohammad Saleh Ahmed, Inspector of the Kolagachia River Police Outpost, arrived at the scene and recovered the body at around 3:45 PM. By evening, the body was transferred to the morgue of Munshiganj General Hospital for autopsy.
Members of the Kolagachia River Police Outpost took photographs of the deceased and sent them to Ramna Police Station in Dhaka. After comparing them with photos provided by the family, police informed them of a match. Bibhuranjan Sarkar’s son, Ritu Sarkar, and Chirraranjan Sarkar later travelled to Munshiganj and confirmed the identity of the body.
Despite the autopsy having been completed, the body had not yet been handed over to the family by 12:15 PM. Chirraranjan Sarkar and other relatives remained at the hospital, awaiting the formal release.
Chirraranjan Sarkar stated that, once the body is released, they will take it back to the family residence in Siddheshwari, Dhaka. From there, it will be taken to the Bardeshwari Kali Temple and crematorium in Sabujbagh, Dhaka, for the final rites.
