Despite 37 hours passing since the commencement of vote counting, the final results of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election have not yet been published.
As of 7:00 am on Saturday, 13 September, counting was completed in 12 out of 21 residential halls. It is expected that the final results will be announced by midday.
In a dramatic development, Professor Mohammad Mafruhi Sattar, a member of the Election Commission, announced his resignation, accepting responsibility for the irregularities that plagued the election.
Professor Sattar is a faculty member of the Department of Pharmacy at Jahangirnagar University and also serves as the President of the Nationalist Teachers’ Forum (JU branch).
Speaking at a press conference held on Friday night (12 September) at the New Arts Building, he stated:
“I resign, taking responsibility for the faulty electoral system and its failures. There was no level playing field. Although the decision was to count the votes using machines, they were instead counted manually, which is a major irregularity.”
He further revealed that he had reported the irregularities in writing to the commission, but no corrective action was taken. Instead, he was pressured not to resign. However, acting on his conscience, he chose to step down.
Professor Sattar clarified that he is not affiliated with the BNP, though he adheres to a particular ideology.
The election saw the participation of a substantial number of students.
