Abahani Limited, the twelve-time winners of the Federation Cup, have seen their hopes of reclaiming the title plunged into uncertainty following a frustrating 1–1 draw against Rahmatganj MFS. The match, contested at the Shahid Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla, has left the “Sky Blues” navigating a precarious path through the group stages, far removed from their dominant form of 2022.
The encounter began with an early shock for the Dhaka giants. In the 9th minute, Rahmatganj’s Ernest Boateng capitalised on a lapse in the Abahani backline to fire the underdogs ahead. Despite dominating possession and launching a relentless offensive, Abahani’s forwards exhibited a staggering lack of clinical finishing. Out of 17 shots registered throughout the match, only one found the back of the net—a penalty converted by Sheikh Morsalin during stoppage time in the first half.
While Abahani controlled the tempo after the interval, Rahmatganj’s resolute defensive block held firm. Abahani’s failure to secure the full three points means their destiny is no longer entirely in their own hands, a troubling scenario for a club that reached the final of this competition only last year.
The draw leaves Group ‘A’ in a state of flux. While Brothers Union have practically secured their progression following a convincing 3–0 victory over PWD at the Kings Arena, Abahani sit in second place with 4 points from three matches. However, with their rivals holding matches in hand, the “Sky Blues” are vulnerable.
Table: Federation Cup Group ‘A’ Current Standings
| Position | Club | Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brothers Union | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 7 |
| 2 | Abahani Limited | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
| 3 | PWD Sports Club | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 3 |
| 4 | Rahmatganj MFS | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| 5 | Fakirerpool YMC | 2 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 |
Abahani’s final group fixture is scheduled for 28 April against PWD. The stakes could not be higher: a defeat would result in an ignominious exit from the tournament. Even a draw or a victory may not suffice if PWD and Rahmatganj achieve favourable results in their remaining games.
For a club with Abahani’s pedigree, the prospect of failing to reach the qualification round is unthinkable. The management will be desperate to address the profligacy of the strike force before their season-defining clash in late April.
