The opening round of the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) witnessed a spectacular resurgence for North Zone as Akbar Ali and Pritam Kumar struck authoritative centuries to seize control against South Zone. Simultaneously, a high-profile partnership between the veteran Mushfiqur Rahim and the rising Amit Hasan has positioned East Zone within striking distance of Central Zone at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Wednesday’s play at the Academy Ground proved to be a masterclass in resilience. North Zone commenced the second day in a precarious position, having lost their top order prematurely. After resuming on 16 for no loss, the side suffered a collective collapse as Abdullah Al Mamun (15), Sabbir Hossain (18), and Iqbal Hossain (9) were dismissed in quick succession.
With the scoreboard reading a dismal 53-3, the captain, Akbar Ali, joined forces with Pritam Kumar to orchestrate a mammoth 233-run partnership. Akbar, leading from the front, blazed 121 runs from 158 deliveries, including 15 boundaries and two sixes, before his dismissal finally broke the stand.
However, the day undeniably belonged to Pritam Kumar, who notched a career-best performance. Pritam remained unbeaten at the close of play on 151 runs, an innings defined by technical precision and aggression, featuring 16 fours and two maximums. Despite losing SM Meherob Hasan (2) and Tanbir Hayder (19) shortly after Akbar’s exit, Pritam found a reliable partner in Sanjamul Islam (22*). Together, they added an unbroken 49 runs to finish the day at 379-6, handing North Zone a 65-run lead over South Zone’s first-innings total of 314.
| Player | Team | Achievement | Impact |
| Pritam Kumar | North Zone | 151* (184 balls) | Career-best score; established 65-run lead. |
| Akbar Ali | North Zone | 121 (158 balls) | Captain’s knock; 233-run record partnership. |
| Ebadot Hossain | East Zone | 4/54 | Dismantled Central Zone’s lower order. |
| Amit Hasan | East Zone | 88* (157 balls) | Anchored the chase against Central Zone. |
| Mushfiqur Rahim | East Zone | 59* (83 balls) | Vital unbeaten fifty to stabilise the middle order. |
Across at the main Sylhet International Stadium, East Zone recovered from early setbacks to finish the day just 64 runs adrift of Central Zone. Central Zone, resuming their innings at 272-6, failed to capitalise on their overnight stability. Abu Hider Rony, who had performed heroically for his 90 on the first day, was dismissed in the second over of the morning without adding to his score.
The teenage wicketkeeper-batter Ashiqur Rahman Shibli also missed out on a deserved century, falling for 86. Central Zone was eventually bundled out for 307, largely due to a spirited spell from pace spearhead Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury, who claimed 4 for 54, and Tofael Ahmed, who took 3 for 31.
East Zone’s response was initially shaky. International stars Zakir Hasan (13) and Mominul Haque (15) failed to convert their starts, leaving the team vulnerable. A brief recovery by Mahmudul Hasan Joy (64) provided some momentum before he too perished.
The final session, however, belonged to the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim and the tenacious Amit Hasan. The duo put on an unbroken 115-run stand, displaying excellent temperament against both pace and spin. Amit ended the day on 88*, while Mushfiqur looked comfortable on 59*. With East Zone at 243-3, the match remains finely poised as they look to overtake Central Zone’s total on Day 3.
As the tournament progresses, the emphasis on domestic long-form cricket is evident in the temperament shown by the younger players. Pritam Kumar’s ability to anchor an innings following a top-order collapse suggests a growing maturity in the national pipeline. For East Zone, the partnership between a seasoned campaigner like Mushfiqur and a prospect like Amit provides the perfect blend of experience and ambition, crucial for navigating the pressures of the BCL.
